Return to School May - June 2020
Return to School May - June 2020
FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
AVPS REMOTE LEARNING SLIDESHOW
REMOTE LEARNING SLIDESHOW
Thanks again to families who have contributed to our slideshow above. These images have certainly captured the story of AVPS's 'Flexible and Remote' learning program and serve as a fabulous record of this part of our history. We also absolutely love the pets joining in learning from home!
Congratulations to all of our students and families for doing their very best to persevere through what has been a most unusual and at times challenging period of all our lives. Thank you for your patience, your kindness, your co-operation, your flexibility and your hard work in following our AVPS remote teaching and learning programs to the best of your ability. We understand it hasn't always been easy and appreciate everyone's efforts.
Although challenging, it has been a time to reflect and appreciate the things that make living, working and learning in our Ascot Vale PS community such a pleasures and privilege. We very much look forward to welcoming students back to school from next week. Please be aware however, COVID -19 means we will not be returning to life as 'normal' and a number of measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of all.
RETURN TO FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING
Teachers, support staff and students will be returning to face to face teaching at Ascot Vale PS, following the advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer.
Some very important stages and changes to our usual practice will be put in place to ensure our return is as safe as possible for everyone.
A comprehensive return to school booklet will be distributed to the school community via a Compass alert tomorrow. In the meantime, here is a summary of the details, below.
STAGED RETURN
AVPS will commence a staged return from remote and flexible learning from Tuesday 26 May 2020.
To support all school staff to prepare for the transition, Monday 25 May will be a pupil-free day. This will enable the planning necessary to ensure a successful transition back to school. Please make alternative arrangements for the care of your children on this day. Camp Australia will run a care program only for families who have pre-booked. Please make a booking (available soon) via the parent portal or, if you are new to Camp Australia and need care arrangements next Monday, please sign up at https://www.campaustralia.com.au/ .
The return to school will take place in two stages. This will give the Victorian Chief Health Officer and Government time to monitor and evaluate the effects that the staged return to school has on the increased movement of people and transmission within the community.
Stage 1: 25 May – 5 June
In the first stage, students in Year Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 will return to school from Tuesday 26 May.
Remote and flexible learning will continue for all students in Years 3 to 6 until Tuesday 9 June.
During Stage 1, the existing model of on-site schooling for students (Years 3-6) who cannot be supervised at home and vulnerable children will remain in place.
Stage 2: from 9 June
Students in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 will return to school from Tuesday 9 June. All students will be expected to attend school as normal from this date.
Please note our previous plans for a pupil free day on this same day have been cancelled.
IMPORTANT MESSAGES / REMINDERS
CHANGES TO USUAL PRACTICE
While the Chief Health Officer has advised that students will not be required to maintain physical distancing at school, there will be a number of important changes to our school operations, consistent with health advice. This will apply until further notice. Specific details about our local school context will be provided in an information handbook and Compass alerts. The details will include:
Whilst some families may feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and learning, please be reassured that this decision has been taken on the basis of the best health advice available to our state. More information about the return to school and coronavirus (COVID-19) can be found on the Department’s website, which will continue to be updated:
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/department/Pages/coronavirus.aspx
Thank you for your continued support and patience during this time. We look forward to welcoming our students back to the classroom from next week.
ON SITE SUPERVISION AND CARE REQUEST PROCESS - YEAR 3-6 STUDENTS
A reminder, requests for care and supervision must be received by the school by hard copy or email [email protected] by 3:00pm on the Thursday of the previous school week. Thank you, this will help us manage onsite staffing rosters. See Compass alert sent by Michael on Wednesdays for details and the request form.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES / REMINDERS
- Regarding Year 3-6 students who cannot be supervised at home and vulnerable children, the existing model of on-site schooling will remain in place during the two-week period from Tuesday 26 May to Tuesday 9 June. The current process that we are using to enable parents and carers to indicate the days or part-days for which on-site schooling is required will continue for this two-week period. All other students in these year levels will continue learning from home until Tuesday 9 June.
- Once a year level has returned, all students will be expected to attend school as normal. This means if you choose to keep your child/children home after their year level has returned to on-site schooling, we can no longer support their learning from home. This does not apply to children who need to be absent for health or medical reasons. For those families, please contact us so we can make an appropriate plan.
- This same approach is being taken by all government schools in Victoria.
- To support the health and wellbeing of all our students and staff, our school will continue an enhanced cleaning routine and will encourage frequent hand washing.
- If you child is ill or is feeling unwell, they must not attend school. They must remain home and seek medical advice.

This will apply until further notice. Specific details about our local school context will be provided in an information handbook and Compass alerts. The details will include:
- restrictions on access to the school site for anyone other than immediate school staff and students;
- adjusted arrangements for drop off and pick up, including units being allocated specific gates to enter and exit the school
- enhanced cleaning and hygiene arrangements;
- parent-teacher meetings and interviews to be held remotely
- shared materials / materials brought from home
Whilst some families may feel anxious about this move back to classroom teaching and learning, please be reassured that this decision has been taken on the basis of the best health advice available to our state. WHILE THE CATS (have been) AWAY .......THE MICE HAVE PLAYED
We took the opportunity to get some 'jobs' done around AVPS whilst the school was less occupied than usual. Units 3, 4 & 5 were painted throughout (meaning all classrooms have been recently painted- yay!) Roof gutters cleaned. New hall indoor lamps and an outside sensor light installed. PLUS a security system installed at the front entrance of the school. Oh, - the kids didn't really tidy up the leaves, they were just having fun pretending to!
