FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
RETURN TO SCHOOL (R2S)
It has been fantastic to finally have all students back at school. Thank you to our community members, especially our students, for your co-operation in adjusting to our return to school routines featuring:
Some VERY IMPORTANT special requests to parents/guardians based on recent feedback received include:
The examples above have been witnessed far too regularly in the past weeks, particularly by teachers who are now situated to observe drop off and pick up processes. Staff and some community members are regularly expressing concern for the safety of our students around roads and footpaths at drop off and pick up times.
R2S HANDBOOK
AVPS will update community members when the Department of Education and Training announces further lifting of COVID - 19 restrictions. In the meantime, the school will continue to follow the guidelines outlined in the AVPS Return to School Information Handbook. (Click link to access)
MANAGING A SUSPECTED CASE OF CV-19
Parents/guardians are reminded to please communicate with the school as soon as possible if their child/children are suspected or confirmed as having coronavirus (COVID-19). See Department of Education and Training advice below in italics:
The Department of Education and Training has comprehensive procedures in place with the Department of Health and Human Services to manage suspected or confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in schools.
Parents are requested to contact the school if your child:
– is a confirmed case
– has been in close contact with a confirmed case.
Department of Health and Human Services defines ‘close contact’ as someone who has either:
– had at least 15 minutes of face-to-face contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19)
– shared a closed space for more than two hours with someone who is a confirmed case.
If the school has a confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19), the Department will work with the school to undertake a deep clean and the school will be made operational as soon as possible.
REPORTS - SEMESTER 1 - UPDATE
The Department of Education and Training has adjusted the expectations of Student Reports for Semester 1 in recognition of the transition to remote and flexible learning during Term 2. While our school has continued to deliver its teaching and learning program and monitor the achievement and progress of each student, there have been some unprecedented changes to our usual program.
At Ascot Vale Primary School (AVPS) we know it is vital to involve students and their parents/carers in learning. This process includes providing reports on student learning. We will provide a written report for the parent/carer of each student enrolled at the school for Semester 1. The reports will include some information on student achievement for curriculum areas taught, however, there are some changes from our usual Semester 1 reports.
Student reports for Semester 1 2020 will include:
Ascot Vale Primary School will not be including teacher judgments and a five-point scale due to the unprecedented changes to our program due to COVID-19. We will report on progress at the end of the year. Semester 1 reports will be slightly delayed. It is planned that they will be published to parents/carers via COMPASS on Monday 20th July 2020. Details about Parent Teacher Interviews will be communicated later this term.
RETURN TO SCHOOL (R2S)
It has been fantastic to finally have all students back at school. Thank you to our community members, especially our students, for your co-operation in adjusting to our return to school routines featuring:
- Physical distancing measures implemented mostly by the adults and sometimes by children.
- Staggered drop off and pick up times using allocated gates - these arrangements have continued to operate smoothly and we appreciate community members altering their usual practices to help 'distance' and 'stagger' our gatherings.
- Increased hand hygiene. Reminder - plenty of liquid soap and sanitiser is available at school but families may choose for children to keep hand sanitiser in their school bags for personal use only.
- Reduced sharing of equipment - e.g., limited items brought from home, use of individual pencil cases instead of shared caddies and PE without equipment.
Some VERY IMPORTANT special requests to parents/guardians based on recent feedback received include:
- Please endeavour to move away from gates once children have been dropped off to prevent children from being tempted or encouraged to walk on or near the road to get around people.
- Please do not use the lane way on Bank Street for U- turns or drop - off. This is considered a dangerous maneuver due to this area having high volumes of young pedestrians who are at times out of sight of drivers.
- Please do not conduct a U turn in front of or near the school. Young pedestrians may cross behind reversing cars conducting U turns, deeming this an unsafe practice that the school strongly discourages. Instead, we suggest the safer option of going around the block to change direction.
- Please avoid dropping children off on the opposite side of the street, resulting in young children having to negotiate cars to get to the school gate. We suggest that, if dropping children 'on the run,' drivers always approach the school from the left side of the school (when facing the school).
- Please do not allow children to exit cars from the 'road' side door. Always use the safer option of the 'curb' side door instead.
The examples above have been witnessed far too regularly in the past weeks, particularly by teachers who are now situated to observe drop off and pick up processes. Staff and some community members are regularly expressing concern for the safety of our students around roads and footpaths at drop off and pick up times.

ENTRY TO THE SCHOOL
A reminder, due to COVID – 19 advice, entry to school grounds will to be limited to those who have an essential need to be here such as school staff, some external support services, cleaners and essential facilities and maintenance staff. Parents and community members may enter the site ONLY by prior arrangement. The school gates will therefore be locked.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS - ALREADY!!
Holidays are strangely arriving quickly for some and slowly for others, but after what has probably been the most unusual term in living memory we remind families that Friday 26th June is the last day of term 2 and dismissal will be at the earlier time of 2:30pm. We very much look forward to what we hope might be a 'more normal' term three in 2020.
Gates will continue to be closed on the holidays as we transition back to 'more normal' times and we ask our close neighbours to help look after our school by reporting any suspicious behaviour in and around our school grounds to the police on ‘000’.
Please note, however, that some contractors will have permission to be on site during the holiday period for the following purposes:
Wishing everyone a fabulous holiday break when it arrives.
See you all back at school on MONDAY 13th July.

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
Hi AVPS Community
We are in the process of getting our Environmental Team up and running to tackle all things sustainable. Classroom environmental monitors have been allocated by teachers and please keep sending that Nude Food to school as often as you can, the planet appreciates it. I have been very impressed with the low quantity of packaging in lunchboxes thus far. We have compost bins, recycling bins and soft plastic recycling bins in classrooms and the staff room which our classroom monitors and staff tend to.
The school has acquired a wooden apple bin from a generous donor (thanks dad!) which will be used as a compost bin. The apple bin will make looking after the compost easier as we can turn the compost regularly.
Plans are afoot to invigorate the gardens with an emphasis on replanting the numerous raised gardening beds dotted around the school. Stay tuned for what the elected Environmental Student Team have in mind. As you can well appreciate, it has been an interesting and rather disrupted year up to now. Hopefully in the not too distant future we can organise a working bee.
Students in Unit 3 have been enjoying tending to the garden and the raised garden beds near the hall. The squeals of excitement (and sometimes horror) when they come across a creepy crawly is always a great source of delight and a terrific learning opportunity.
I look forward to keeping you updated as the year progresses.
Keep it green,
Doug Skate (Unit 3 teacher)

NEWS FROM THE SPORTING FIELD
Firstly, I want to say massive congratulations to every single student, parent, guardian and grandparent who were able to make it through Remote Learning. I know it was a stressful time but I from the work that I received, it was clear that everyone was making sure that they stayed fit and healthy. I was really impressed with the videos and pictures of the entire family working out together. The family that trains together, stays together! Again massive congratulations! Now it is time for the parents, guardians and grandparents to rest, but for the kiddies it is time to ramp up the activity levels, PE is back and we are working on our fitness while keeping a distance from each other.
Virtual Y
YMCA Victoria in conjunction with the Victoria State Government is excited to announce the launch of Virtual Y – a free online platform that includes a range of daily YMCA programming.
With Virtual Y, young people will have access to online programming to help them continue to learn and grow, stay physically active, increase wellbeing and stay connected with one another.
The free content includes a suite of virtual fitness classes, the latest nutritional information, youth engagement initiatives, wellbeing programs and family activities. Everything will be delivered online, allowing young people to connect at home or on the go.
Virtual Y is available to everyone in your community, including your youth, their families, and your staff. Below is the link to learn more about Virtual Y, and get you access via a quick registration process.

District Events
I had a meeting with the other District PE teachers last week and due to the current circumstances we have made the decision to officially move all Term 2 and some of Term 3 events from postponed to cancelled.
Cross Country
Cross Country was meant to take place on the 27th of April it was postponed to the end of Term 2 but we have made the decision to cancel District Cross Country. Division Cross Country has been cancelled as well. I know some students were particularly disappointed as they trained hard to make the team, therefore I have a solution for them! School Sport Victoria has released Virtual Cross Country so students are able to participate in Cross Country and challenge themselves to beat their personal best. Students follow the links on the website attached and find the distance they want to run, run their race and enter their time. Their time will then to put into a table and they will be able to see how their time compares to others in their category.
All information on Virtual Cross Country can be found by clinking on the link below.
https://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/Pages/VirtualCrossCountry.aspx
So far only Saeed from Unit 6A and Lucy from Unit 2A have participated in the Virtual Cross Country, so HUGE congratulations to them both!
Interschool Sports
Interschool Sports for levels 5/6 has officially been cancelled, the District had considered moving ISS to another term, however it was not possible.
AVPS Athletics Day
Again due to the current circumstance, the AVPS Athletics Day which levels 3 – 6 participate in, is no longer postponed but cancelled, the District Athletics Day is also cancelled. I know many students will be very disappointed in hearing this news, therefore I have created the AVPS Virtual Athletics Competition. The AVPS Virtual Athletics Competition will be available on students PE Google Classrooms, all of the events will be explained in student’s classwork folder. Students will be able to watch videos on how to perform the events and read detailed instructions on how to measure and record their answers. This event will require parent assistance and I will be strongly adhering to the honesty system. Students are only allowed to enter their scores and must not touch any other student’s scores. There will be two aspects to this event, students will be able to enter their scores and submit it only to me or they will be able to enter their scores to a school wide spreadsheet so they can compete with other students in their age group. It is up to the individual student how they wish to publish their scores, there is no pressure to post it on the school wide spreadsheet if they just want to compete against themselves and achieve a new personal best. Just as it is up to the student to decide if they want to compete against others.
This event will be done at home and thus is NOT COMPULSARY. If a student does not wish to participate that is completely fine. Students also do not have to compete in every event, if they only want to do one or two events that is absolutely okay.
All information is in students PE Google Classroom, the AVPS Virtual Athletics Competition will end on Thursday the 9th of July, so students have a week of school and the entire holidays to practice and submit their results to me, via google classroom. Again the AVPS Virtual Athletics Competition is non-compulsory and being completed at home, not during PE time, as students are presently unable to use equipment at school.
The AVPS Virtual Athletics Competition will be released to students no later than Friday the 19th of June.
Any questions please email me at [email protected]
