TERM THREE 2020 #done
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
SLIDESHOW
We hope you enjoy our slideshow above, showcasing remote and flexible leaning. Thank you to the families who contributed this week.
THANK YOU PARENTS, GUARDIANS & STUDENTS
On behalf of the AVPS staff team, thank you to our parents, guardians and children for a stellar effort in surviving remote and flexible learning for an entire term. It has been such a memorable term, one we hope will not be repeated anytime soon.
Having just completed reading mid semester reports, it was very pleasing to hear of very sound levels of engagement, positivity, participation and achievement throughout term 3, despite the challenging circumstances. We are very proud of the efforts of all students, who did a fantastic job of following our important school values of 'doing their best', excellence, and getting on with learning despite adversity, 'responsibility'. Well done! We cant wait to have you all back on site.

THANK YOU AVPS STAFF
We wish our wonderful AVPS staff a very happy and well deserved break. MUCH gratitude is extended to all staff for their hard work, creativity, patience, commitment, humour and very strong sense of optimism that helped support each other to not only survive, but also thrive (some of the time) in what has been the most disjointed and challenging term in memory.
Michael Carr Gregg provided a very strong opening messages in his recent 'Coronacoaster' parenting workshop, along the lines of:
"One of the most important things an adult can do for child during difficult times is to give them a sense of 'we've got this' - instilling confidence that together we will get through this." To our AVPS staff - YES #youcertainlydidhavethis in spades in term 3, 2020. Thank you, put your feet up, refresh and get ready for another exciting adventure that awaits us in term 4. (See term 4 details below)
STAFF NEWS - farewell Sarah - welcome Jamie
Following a recent teacher selection process, I am very pleased to announce that Jamie Saggers has been appointed to the AVPS Family Leave position, taking over from Sarah Ashton in term 4, who will be embarking upon her next exciting phase of life - parenthood.
Jamie will be joining us from Lara Lake PS and she comes to AVPS as a very experienced teacher and team leader of upper primary year levels. She has recently met Sarah, Ellen and the year 5/6 team (Alister and Bridie) who are all very much looking forward to working with Jamie in term 4.
It is anticipated that Sarah and Jamie will have some cross over time in the first week of term 4 to work together and gradually ‘hand over the reins’. We are confident that Jamie will have a positive effect on unit 4b and the AVPS team.
We are also hopeful that there will be an opportunity for students and families to farewell Sarah in the first week of term 4. This is all dependent on the co-operation of Sarah’s baby arriving on the due date and not early of course!
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Sarah for teaching and guiding her Unit 4B students, as well as leading her teaching team so very well, in what has turned out to be quite a challenging and disjointed year. Sarah has made the most of an undesirable situation by keeping connections strong and standards high. She has also relied upon on her robust and dependable sense of humour to cope with the reality that she has only really had a handful of weeks of face to face teaching with her class of 2020. It will certainly be a year to be remembered.
On behalf of the AVPS community we wish Sarah and Sam all the very best of health and happiness as the birth of their first child approaches, which is indeed a very special time for them. We look forward to seeing baby pics before too long.

RUOK? DAY
You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener. Students and staff spent some time last Thursday to focus on the steps to a conversation that could change a someone’s life.
You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener. Students and staff spent some time last Thursday to focus on the steps to a conversation that could change a someone’s life.
These are the 4 steps that staff and students focused on when asking someone if they are OK.
We also highlighted that before you can look out for others, you need to look out for yourself. And that’s ok. If you're not in the right headspace or you don't think you're the right person to have the conversation, try to think of someone else in their support network who could talk to them.

HOLIDAYS
Gates will continue to be locked on the holidays as our school grounds and in particular, our playground is not to be used by the community. We ask our close neighbours to help look after our school by reporting any suspicious behaviour in and around our school grounds to the police on ‘000’.
Please note that some contractors have permission to be on site during the holiday period for maintenance purposes.
Wishing everyone a fabulous holiday break.
Thank you and take good care.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
On Monday 14th September, School Council met via Webex for our second last meeting for 2020. It was great to reconnect with everyone again and swap lockdown tips!
Due to the pandemic, we were not able to present an Annual Report Meeting this year and we have not been having any sub-committee meetings. However, the Finance sub-committee have continued oversee the school budget and provide guidance there has been some homework being conducted on some of of our policies. Thank you to the parents who participated in the BYOD survey. School council are in the process of reviewing the results. Please stay tuned for communication from the school regarding this.
For much of this year, learning has been delivered remotely which has been both unprecedented and challenging for families as well as teaching staff. At our meetings we have had been sharing feedback on how remote learning is progressing. In term 2, staff and parent surveys provided valuable feedback which was used to improve the remote learning experience this time round.
One of the Key Improvement strategies from our School Strategic Plan is “Building Practice Excellence” and part of this involves the staff planning and teaching collaboratively. This year has been the perfect opportunity for staff to consolidate these skills and well and truly smash that target, with the need to adapt to new technology and teaching in a different format.
As a parent, it has been so heartwarming to see staff continuing to foster a face-to-face relationship with their students via video calls. It has kept the children engaged and connected to their peers and their school. Having virtual assemblies, newsletters, “Snooz'n with Susan” and the entertaining staff videos has helped to keep morale high as well as maintain community connection. Thank you Sue for your wonderful videography skills!
I would like to sincerely thank ALL of the staff at AVPS this year for their commitment, diligence, adaptability and most of all for their comradery. In no other year have parents appreciated teachers more than in 2020.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sarah Ashton for her time on School Council and wish her all the best as she goes on leave shortly to have her first child. Sarah taught both my daughters and is the most extra-ordinary teacher. I am sure she will be an amazing Mum!
