HELLO FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
Dear parents, carers, staff, and students,
AVPS has enjoyed a jam packed term 1 this year, highlighted by Cultural Diversity week celebrations, Year 3 & 5 NAPLAN assessments, new School Councillors inducted, Parent Rep events, which started earlier this year (e.g., Special Lunch Days, Bake Sales & Fresh Fruit Fridays), students being appointed to leadership positions, Clean up Australia Day, and Smile Squad.. amongst many other events and activities.
One of the biggest highlights for staff was the excellent Staff Professional Development day held recently, where Misty Adoniou presented a day-long workshop about Writing (non-fiction texts using exemplar, mentor texts to guide learning). Some teachers from Moonee Ponds West PS joined our staff on the day, as Misty is a highly sought after expert in the field of literacy and works with many schools in our local network and beyond in the greater Melbourne area. March 7th was the only day that Misty was available to present to us in term 1. Thank you to our school community for supporting this pupil free day (PFD), held on a Thursday, which is unusual for AVPS. We acknowledge the impacts of PFDs on busy families, prefering to arrange them adjoining holidays or weekends to limit burdens on families, however, it wasn't possible this term.
It has been great to observe our year prep students growing more and more in confidence as the term has progressed. It has been especially delightful to catch our older buddies in natural acts of kindness; supporting their younger buddies in the school yard. A recent example involved Unit 2 older students going out of their way to simply say hello (and have a nice day) before school to one of their Unit 3 year prep buddies, where this young buddy soon bounced confidently into class after this very pleasant exchange, witnessed by me (Sue) and her mum - melting both our hearts.
We hope all families have a safe and pleasant vacation period. We look forward to seeing you all next term on Monday 15th April, where we will be farewelling our excited Year 5/6 students who will begin their much anticipated Canberra trip on the same day. Best wishes to these students and staff for a most enjoyable week in Canberra.
Kind regards,
From the Principal Team

PART 3 – EMPATHY
This next presentation from The Resilience Project is all about Empathy and Kindness.
Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practice this through being kind and compassionate towards other people.
Brain imaging data shows that being kind to others registers in the brain as more like eating chocolate than like fulfilling an obligation to do what’s right (e.g., eating brussel sprouts)!
Research shows that practicing empathy, such as performing acts of kindness, taps into our brain’s ‘mirror neurons’, builds compassion and our behaviour becomes more social and community-based.

Student Leadership
Congratulations to all of our recently elected 2024 student leaders who were presented with their leadership badges at Monday's (Unit 4 leading) assembly in the Hall. The presentations were to the Student Voice Team, House Captains, Student Representative Council and Environment Team.
We are very proud of our student leaders and are excited about the contribution that they will make to our great school this year. We ran out of time at assembly to take photos. Each team will take a picture together at their next meeting and this will be published on Class Dojo at some stage next term.

Dogs at School - reminder
Community members are asked to familiarise themselves with the AVPS Dogs at School policy and procedure. The school has received feedback, identifying that pedestrian gates can sometimes be difficult for fearful students to enter or exit due to the number of dogs gathered near the gate.
Dog owners are requested to be mindful that some members of our school community are fearful of dogs and to please move away from gates or high areas of pedestrian congestion.
The following excerpt from our policy, in italics below, helps guide our practices. Please read this as a reminder about the rules in place to help keep our community safe and comfortable.
Whilst AVPS understands that many families in our school community keep dogs as pets, to ensure that our school remains a safe and inclusive place for everyone, we have in place a number of rules that we expect all families to follow if they wish to bring their pet dog onto school grounds:

Whilst AVPS understands that many families in our school community keep dogs as pets, to ensure that our school remains a safe and inclusive place for everyone, we have in place a number of rules that we expect all families to follow if they wish to bring their pet dog onto school grounds:
- All dogs entering AVPS must be on short leads (not extendable leads) that are controlled by an adult, not by a child.
- Dogs must be on leash at all times when on school grounds, not just during school hours.
- Dog owners are requested to always be mindful that children are the first priority in a school environment and that some children are unfamiliar with and/or afraid of dogs.
- Dog owners are requested to assess the demeanour of their dog before entering the school grounds and are requested not to enter the school grounds if the demeanour of the dog is not suited to an environment where children are present.
- Dog owners are requested to leave dogs at home during school events, such as family gatherings and fetes.
- Dog owners must be familiar with their legal responsibilities and be aware that the school takes no responsibility for the behaviour or actions of their dogs.
- Staff can request that dog owners remove their dog from the school grounds.
- Incidents involving dog bites or injuries to children, adults or other animals will be reported by the school to the City of Moonee Valley.
- Dog owners must remove and dispose of dog excrement.
- Dog owners must abide by the City of Moonee Valley on‐leash laws.

Autism Acceptance Month
April is Autism Acceptance Month (AAM) and a great opportunity to celebrate our autistic students, learn more about how we can support and include them, and help foster understanding and acceptance of autism among all students and the wider community. AAM is an offshoot of the United Nations’ sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on Tuesday 2 April 2024. The day will begin a month of global events to celebrate autistic people.
Our school is committed to understanding, including and celebrating our autistic students and values the contribution they and their families make to our school.
To celebrate AAM, we would like to share some resources that support autistic students and their families.
The Department of Education has worked with organisations for autistic people and lead researchers in autism to develop new resources for schools to help us better understand, support and celebrate the strengths of autistic students. I hope you find them useful and insightful.
More support for autistic students
The department has established the Diverse Learners Hub to help meet the needs of diverse learners, including autistic students. It is a key initiative of Disability Inclusion and flagship of the Autism Education Strategy.
The hub provides evidence-based advice, information and resources on best-practice inclusive teaching for autistic students.

Neurodiversity Week
Neurodiversity Week was officially recognised from March 18th to 24th. At AVPS though, we celebrate neurodiversity EVERY week, highlighting the unique talents and perspectives of all our learners. We embrace diversity and recognise the richness it brings to our community. A key tool in fostering understanding and acceptance is storytelling, particularly through picture books. These books offer a wonderful platform to open up conversations about neurodiverse learners, allowing us to explore different experiences and perspectives in a safe and engaging way. By embracing the power of literature, we continue to create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported.

FLEMINGTON FARMERS’ MARKET
BAKE SALES
Thank you to our Parent Reps (named below) for their behind the scenes efforts in preparing for our first bake sale for the year, last Sunday. Appreciation is also extended to the countless families who provided delicious baked goods for this most successful fundraising event. Here is the Flemington Farmers’ Market schedule for the 2024 school year:
- 24th March

The Parent Reps have opted for a ‘less is best’ approach this year, where fewer stalls will be held but more families invited to contribute baked goods at each event.

ENVIRONMENT TEAM NEWS
Congratulations to the 2024 Environmental Team who were presented with their badges on Monday during assembly.
Unit 1: Carys & Lucas. Unit 2: Maya & Richie. Unit 3: Robin & Zara. Unit 4: Alex &Maya Unit 5: Isaac & Poppy. Unit 6: Gus & Maeve.
All units now have new compost caddies. A big thankyou to the families who donated their spares.
CLEAN-UP AUSTRALIA DAY
This term the school participated in clean up Australia Day. The Environmental Team looked at ways we can keep the school ground litter free and have implemented a school wide timetable where every unit goes out into the yard for 10 minutes once a week to collect rubbish with the slogan:
“Just 10 minutes a week to stop rubbish heading to the creek.”
Also- we have…Rubbish Ninjas. If any student enjoys the idea of stealthily creeping up on unsuspecting wrappers in the yard, equipped with a bucket and tongs, see Doug in unit 1 at the start of lunch. You will be given all you need to become a Rubbish Ninja (headbands will be supplied).
We will also leave a bin that will be placed in the yard over the weekend for those who use the school during this time. Thanks Sue for the great idea. Hopefully this will encourage visitors to dispose of their rubbish thoughtfully.
The team have also made more signs for pet owners reminding them to please pick up after their pets. These signs are around the playground areas.
Next term we will look into registering our school with the Victorian container recycling scheme to raise money by collecting recyclable bottles and cans. Stay tuned for this initiative…

sport & pe news
It’s been a whirlwind of sports excitement this term! First off, massive congratulations to all the students who represented the school at the district swimming event. All the students swam their hearts out and made us proud. During PE lessons, students demonstrated incredible determination in the cross country trials. It was very pleasing to see every student having a go in addition to the heartwarming sportsmanship. The 5/6s participated in the Inter School Gala Day on 26th of March, taking part in soccer, tennis and cricket. They have been enthusiastic about the day with some even taking on informal leadership positions within their sport or teams. A special thank you to all our parent helpers so far this term. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to volunteer early for upcoming sporting events, more hands make lighter work 😊
With an even bigger term of sport coming up, here are some of the key dates below:
District Cross Country (teams to be announced soon): 20th of May
5/6 Winter Gala Day One: 31st of May
3-6 Athletics Carnival: 5th of June
5/6 Winter Gala Day Two: 14th of June

Drama News
As my maternity leave begins soon I wanted to use this space to thank all of the students as AVPS who have embraced Drama and have come to each lesson eager to give every game and activity a try. It has been amazing to watch students' confidence grow through their participation in Drama. As my parting gift to the amazing AVPS community, here are a few drama games you can play at home as a family. Hope you all have some fun playing them.
Instant Talent Show - Go around your house and put a
bunch of fun things in a box. Items such as: a cape, silly hats, a
kazoo, a pool noodle, some sort of cane/stick or pole, a fake
microphone, a top hat, a wig, a clown nose, a feather boa, a
book of jokes. Pick a room in your house where you can have a
stage area. Gather your family and friends. Start by asking
everyone what kind of things they’ve seen in a talent show. This
helps everyone feel creative. Let people use things from the box
or around the house. Give everyone ten minutes to come up with
something to perform!
Counting to Ten as a Family: The entire family must count to 10 together.
BUT, only one person at a time may call out a number. If two or more people
speak at once, the family must start at the beginning again. Don’t cheat and
try to come up with a system! See if your family can get all the way to ten
by intuition alone. (Optional: talk about what intuition is, and have a family
discussion about how it can help you at the end of the game.)
One Word Story: Gather your family in a circle and tell a story one word at a time.
Mine Field - One player is blindfolded, and the room is filled with
obstacles (put a couple of chairs turned on their side, leave all kinds of
junk on the floor). The idea is that the rest of the family will lead the
blindfolded player from the start line to the finish line, by talking.
Variation: get in teams of two and see which team can successfully guide
the blindfolded person to the finish line first.
Word Association Game - Players sit in a circle. Have someone start with
a word, any word. Then, go around the circle, each person saying what
the previous person’s word reminded him or her of. For example: cat,
dog, pet, fleas, litter box, vet, shots, doctor, hospital, nurse, patient, sick,
crazy, weird, wonderful, great, fun, play, theater, act, actress. End with
the person who started.
Emotion Stories - Gather family in the living room and turn off all the
lights. Light a candle or use a flashlight and take turns telling stories
that relate to emotions. “The time I was most happy was when...” “The
time I was most scared was when...” (variations: proud of myself,
excited, nervous, surprised, angry, lonely, felt most loved, etc..) You
may choose to talk about the stories afterward.

mvimp - mOONEE VALE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
27th March 2024
MVIMP continues to hum along. It is great watching students rushing off to lessons with instruments and music sheets. It has also been wonderful watching students perform at our assemblies.
Thanks to everyone for using the MVIMP dojo page and keeping up with all of the timetable changes that have had to occur. We do our best to keep you informed. Don’t hesitate to send us a message if you have any questions.
Band will continue on Thursday mornings at 9am. I know the cellists in the band are happy to leave their instruments at school on a Wednesday night!
Finally, thank you to everyone who has returned their MVIMP contracts. If you haven't, please do so as soon as possible.

9th February 2024
Please check below to confirm the day that your child has their lesson.
Monday
Don’t forget that BAND is now on a Thursday at 9.00am.
Band is made up of predominately year six students who have been part of the program for a few years. Some year 5 students have been invited to join by their tutor. Students have been informed if they are in Band.
MVIMP camp occurs early in term 3. This is a time when some of our year 6 students in band are invited to attend. There are only a limited number of places available, as all four of the MVIMP schools attend.
If you haven’t returned your MVIMP contract, please do so ASAP.
For those new students at AVPS, MVIMP is an instrumental music program offered to students in Years 3-6. If your child is in Year 3-6 and they are interested in being part of the MVIMP program, please inform the office ASAP. We have some spaces still available in Woodwind, Violin and Strings.
Thanks,
Amanda and Jason
