WELCOME TO THE 2020 SCHOOL YEAR
FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
WELCOME BACK
It has been such a pleasure to welcome our current and new families to the 2020 school year at AVPS. The children (and staff) seem to have settled in with ease. It has been particularly pleasant to have in place running water, toilets, PA system, electricity, communications systems (compass/email), a staff room, an established office and a brand new oval and playground, unlike the same time last year when we had none of these. Yes, 2019 was horrible; which makes us all the more grateful for the pleasant amenities and surrounds of 2020. We wish everyone a fantastic new school year.
The school grounds and buildings have improved markedly on previous years and we are looking forward to even more improvements in 2020. See details about these below under the heading of 'Buildings and Grounds News'.

CORONAVIRUS - UPDATES
As of Thursday 6th February, the latest advice from the Department of Education and Training regarding the coronavirus is outlined below:
The Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Officer and Victoria’s Chief Health Officer recommended a stronger precautionary approach to managing coronavirus for travellers returned from mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) from 1st February 2020.
The recommendation is that parents/guardians/carers should ensure that any student returning from mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) who was in mainland China on or after 1 February 2020 is isolated at home and should not attend school until 14 days after they were last in mainland China.
This recommendation does not apply retrospectively. It applies only to students who were in mainland China on or after 1 February 2020.
The existing advice remains that parents/guardians/carers of students should ensure that any student is isolated at home and should not attend school for 14 days:
The Commonwealth has also advised that: “additional border measures will be implemented to deny entry to Australia to people who have left or transited through mainland China from 1 February 2020, with the exception of Australian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family and air crews who have been using appropriate personal protective equipment”.
Please refer to the Department’s coronavirus web page (see link below), where the latest advice including fact sheets (with translations) for schools and parents will be uploaded as soon as available.
This new advice is based on the latest expert recommendations of the Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Officer and Victoria’s Chief Health Officer.
Please contact the school if you have any concerns or queries about this advice.
Please assist by reminding (and modelling to) children good hygiene practices; please also find the following Department of Education and Training resources attached below:

2020 STAFFING UPDATES
Farewell Tina - Our Library Technician / Literacy Intervention Assistant, Tina Kountouri, was appointed to a Education Support position at Truganina P-9 College in the final week of term 4, 2019. We congratulate Tina on this appointment to a Leveled Literacy Intervention position that she is very deserving of. We extend our gratitude to Tina for her many years of service and commitment to AVPS students, staff and parents, in particular her role in: managing the Library, providing Literacy support for countless children, Book Club & Book Fair management, Fundraiser donations, providing support and assistance to all staff and students as well as providing office and integration assistance. Farewell and best wishes Tina.
Welcome Doug - Also very late in the year we confirmed, what we had been expecting to happen in the'near future' (which arrived 'sooner'), that our increasing enrolment numbers warranted the creation of a 7th unit (or 13th class). Annie volunteered to teach in the 7th unit located next to the music room (thank you Annie!!) and Doug Skate was appointed to a vacancy that was advertised over the holidays. Congratulations and welcome to Doug, who comes to us as an experienced early years teacher from Pascoe Vale PS. He will be teaching Years P/1/2 alongside Marg in Unit 3.
AVPS 2020 ENROLMENT - restrictions in place
Our enrolments numbers have broken through the 300 mark for the first time in recent history. We are expecting 302 as our official 2020 February 28th census figure. At the same time last year we had 271 and in 2018 it was 286, which had grown from 254 in 2016, just two years earlier.
We have been directly advised that AVPS should limit the number of students enrolling from outside the designated neighbourhood area so that capacity is not exceeded. Therefore, we are only able to accept student enrolments if Ascot Vale PS is the closest Victorian Government Primary School to family residential addresses.
Please encourage interested families to visit our AVPS enrolment webpage (click link) for further information and the Find My School website (click link) to identify whether or not AVPS is their closest Government school.

FUNDRAISING
Icy Pole Fridays are on again this term!
Every Friday the Parent community sell pop corn (no butter or salt...just pain old pop corn) and 99% fruit juice icy pole zooper doopers for $1 each. This is a fundraiser for our grade six graduation at the end of the year.
Please send some spare change along with your child, or come to the canteen with them if they would like to purchase an icy pole after school.
Helpers are needed to run this after school and we are looking for three or four, grade five Mum's or Dad's to help sell these from the canteen window every Friday for this term then again in term four when the weather is hot.
Please email Sue Macaulay if you can help out [email protected] or let Kylie know in the office, or just pop into the canteen at 3pm on Friday to start popping the popcorn and setting up.
No special skills are required and it's a great way to catch up with other fellow grade 5 parents.
PARENT REP MEETING- NEXT WEEK
A parent rep meeting has been scheduled for next Thursday 13th February at 9:15 in the staff room- (noting this date has been changed from Friday 14th Feb as Sue will be at a Principal forum that day). All interested parties are welcome. We aim to refresh the parent rep roles for 2020, according to the volunteers available. Please contact the office if you are interested in volunteering as a Parent rep in 2020.
PARENT REP ROLE
Please consider volunteering to be a Parent Rep at AVPS, as this is a great way for new parents to meet other parents in the community and to have a positive impact on your child’s development and education. Please contact the office if you are interested in taking on this important role at AVPS.
The Parent Rep Role involves:
UNIT INFORMATION SESSIONS / GETTING TO KNOW YOU PARENT/ TEACHER MEETINGS
Information about these events will be communicated with you shortly via COMPASS.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS NEWS 2020
Please be aware that the plans to conduct school maintenance in the recent holidays, as outlined in the final newsletter of 2019, did not take place for a number of reasons.
Instead, school maintenance or upgrade plans for the 2020 school year include:
An Asthma Care/Action Plan is required for all students who experience regular asthma and informs the school how to manage your children's asthma and what to do if their asthma gets worse. This must be updated and signed by a doctor on an annual basis. Please forward these to classroom teachers as soon as possible. Thank you to parents who have already presented these. Parents/ Carers, please check with office staff if asthma medication kept in the first aid room is in date.
STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATION
Medical documentation is important to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all of our students. From time to time it is necessary to update student medical and home contact information. If this is the case we ask you to come to the office or write to us to alert us of any change.
CORRIDORS/ WALKWAYS
Please keep corridors clear at the end of the school day. We ask for you to wait outside the building when collecting students at 3.30pm to avoid corridor congestion.
AMBULANCE COVER/ACCIDENT INSURANCE & PRIVATE PROPERTY
Parents are reminded that the Department of Education and Training does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance or transport as well as any other transport costs. We would encourage all families to join Ambulance Victoria – it’s quick and easy – see https://www.ambulance.vic.gov.au/membership/
Parents or guardians and staff are also reminded that the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property. We therefore strongly discourage valuable personal property being brought to school.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES – BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL
We arrange for student supervision according to school needs and ensure staff are aware of their responsibilities to supervise students during school times. We must also annually remind parents/carers of their responsibilities. Parent/ Carers are responsible for the care and supervision for students of AVPS:
ICT STUDENT USER AGREEMENT
At Ascot Vale Primary School students have responsibilities and rules to follow. By using ICT at AVPS you must agree and accept the terms and conditions outlined in the 2020 student ICT user agreement. A copy of our updated 2020 ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) Student Acceptable Use agreement went home with students on Friday 31/1/2020. Ascot Vale Primary School uses the Internet and digital technologies as teaching, learning and collaborative tools. We see the internet and digital technologies as valuable resources, yet acknowledge they must be used responsibly.
For your child to use the internet and related technology at Ascot Vale Primary School, this agreement will need to be read and signed by you. In addition, students in grade 3 through to 6 will also need to sign the appropriate section. Please see your child’s classroom teacher if you need another copy.
3/4 CAMP – DEPOSIT & PERMISSION SLIP due now
We are pleased to announce that the Year 3/4 camp to Campaspe 2020 has been approved by School Council. This year camp for students in Years 3/4 will be held at Campaspe Downs. Students will leave on Wednesday 15th April and return on Friday 17th April 2020 (week 1 term 2). Please see COMPASS for more information. Deposits and Permission slips are due by Friday 18th February. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at school. If you require assistance making payment, please speak to the office staff as soon as possible.
TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OF STUDENTS
AVPS requests that parents, guardians, carers or visitors to our school who may be taking photos or videos (eg assembly, special events) please be mindful of their use of media, particularly when this may contain images of other students, either directly or in the background. Please be aware that there are a number of students who do not have permission for their image to be published online. Please also note, permission to publish is for the school only. We therefore request that parents, guardians, carers or visitors taking photos or videos be conscious that they do not have permission to publish images and ask that images of other students are NOT posted online, including social media sites.
ALLERGIES & a reminder about CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
We have a number of students with allergies at Ascot Vale PS who require specific management. Some of these students also suffer from Anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction to a range of allergens. These reactions can be life threatening for some students.
We therefore ask that all parents and caregivers DO NOT distribute food at any time without the direct permission of the regular classroom teacher.
Our ‘Celebrating Birthdays at AVPS’ guidelines provide more details about this important school rule and is available online at:
http://avps.vic.edu.au/uploads/9/5/6/5/95656824/celebratingbirthdaysguidelines2017.pdf
BIKES, SCOOTERS AND COMMUNITY SAFETY
Students and parents/ caregivers are reminded that bicycles and scooters are NOT allowed to be ridden on school property between 8.45-3.45pm. Bikes can be ridden after the 3.45pm bell as long as appropriate protection is used and that parents/ carers are supervising. We encourage students to ride to school however health and safety rules must protect pedestrians and our community members inside these times. Students have recently been reminded by their teachers. We ask for your help with this matter.
SAFETY REMINDERS - DROP OFF/PICK UP
In the interests of children's safety, community members are reminded to NOT use the carpark / lane driveway on Bank Street as a drop off zone. This is considered a hazardous practice, given that children often walk across this driveway. Please observe our signs in the image below and use the designated drop off zones on Bank and Moonee Streets. Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation in this matter.
Please be aware that the plans to conduct school maintenance in the recent holidays, as outlined in the final newsletter of 2019, did not take place for a number of reasons.
Instead, school maintenance or upgrade plans for the 2020 school year include:
- Unit 3 to be painted in Easter / April holidays.
- Unit 4-5 to be painted and carpeted in the July holidays
- Playground to be installed before the end of the 2020 school year. We are planning to share with the community a design concept from late last year that includes student voice shortly.

NEWS FROM THE SPORTING FIELD
Purpose of Newsletter pieces
Welcome back to the routine of school! I hope all of the parents and students had an amazing holiday and stayed as active as possible. Again this year I will be using the newsletter to keep parents up to date on what is going on in your child’s PE lessons, AVPS events and District Events. As well as congratulating those who achieve success in the school sporting events I would like to start recognising those who achieve sporting success outside of school. If your child has participated in a tournament, triathlon, grand final or passed a grading, please email me with the specific details (condensed please) and I will put it in the following AVPS newsletter.
My email address is [email protected]
AVPS Swimming Trials
A compass event has been created for the AVPS Swimming trials which will be held on Thursday the 13th of February at Queens Park Swimming Pool, this event is non-compulsory, if your child would like to try out for 50m Freestyle, Backstroke, Breast Stroke or Butterfly please give consent and payment, otherwise they will not be allowed to attend. Parents you are responsible for your child, please bring them to the pool, look after them and take them to school. We didn’t have many students try out last year so I am hoping that the numbers will increase this year!
This event is open to all year 3 – 6 students, however as with all district events, the minimum age is students who will be 9 years old by the end of the year. If your child was born in 2012 they will not be able to compete, this only means that they get one more year to practise and then they can try out next year!
I would love some helpers with timing so if you could email me or volunteer on the day that would be amazing. Looking forward to seeing as many smiling/tired faces as possible!
Calendar
On Compass the community calendar has been updated with all dates for the District Events, I am hoping that by doing so we can get as many parents coming along to cheers for our amazing AVPS team!
Compass
All events that occur throughout the school year will be on Compass, please be aware of this and regularly check compass for any outstanding consent or payments that may be required as it may mean that your child misses out on events.
AVPS Divisional Event Policy
Parents please be aware that if your child progresses to the Divisional Events that you will be required to take them to those events. AVPS is not able to take such small numbers of students due to the prices of hiring a bus and replacing myself, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we hope that you understand.
Sports Levy
Each year a PE / Sports levy is charged for each student to provide ‘value added’ PE or sporting experiences for children of all ages throughout the year. Year level sports levies differ from each other due to the different programs on offer for different year levels. Below is the breakdown of each year level to give parents/guardians a better understanding of how these funds are used and how they add much value to our school wide Sport and PE program.
