A reminder that there is NO school for students this coming Monday and Tuesday
WORLD TEACHER'S DAY
We think our AVPS teachers are pretty special everyday but they will be even more special tomorrow, on Friday 30 October, when AVPS celebrates World Teachers’ Day; to express our gratitude and recognise the continued dedication and support our teachers provide our AVPS community.
AVPS will celebrate World Teachers’ Day by encouraging everyone to wear bright colours on Friday (30/10) in honour of our wonderful teachers who have done a magnificent job of bringing brightness to AVPS children (and each other) throughout a challenging 2020. Children, staff (and parents as well) can join in the celebration by simply adding a splash of colour to their outfit, or go all out and dress in full colour attire on Friday. We will also have some special recess treats and outdoor activities in store for our fabulous teachers on Friday.
This year World Teachers’ Day has the theme ‘Teachers: leading in crisis, reimagining the future.’ This theme reflects the continued commitment teachers have made to their students and as education leaders, throughout the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While this year has been difficult for us all, World Teachers’ Day is a great way to say thank you to our teachers for their support and efforts in helping students adapt during this challenging time.
Parents, carers and children can also get involved by sending a message of gratitude to a teacher by using the hashtag #WTD2020 on social media. Head to this link to access a range of resources to help you and your children to celebrate World Teachers’ Day 2020, including ‘Thank You’ card templates.
We also encourage you to send a message of gratitude to your child's teacher/s now via ClassDojo.
FRIDAY FUNDAY
World Teacher's Day will launch a special term four AVPS feature - 'Friday Funday' where EVERY Friday until the end of the school year will be a day of colour and fun at AVPS. So........ don't pack those colourful clothes or accessories away too soon, have them ready every Friday in term 4 from now on.
Bright, 'friendly' Halloween colours will be ok to wear tomorrow 30/10 and it will also be appropriate to see Christmas colours on Fridays in December........................ "Oh what fun we'll have."
In case you're out of ideas for bright colourful clothes, you could steal this one from Unit 5 teacher Heath below:

THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA
Grass pollen season occurs between October and December. We are reminded of an increased risk of seasonal asthma, hay fever and epidemic thunderstorm asthma during this time. Epidemic thunderstorm asthma events are triggered by an uncommon combination of high grass pollen levels and a certain type of thunderstorm, resulting in large numbers of people developing asthma symptoms over a short period of time. People with a history of asthma, undiagnosed asthma or hay fever are at an increased risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma during this time. Having both hay fever and asthma that are poorly managed increases the risk further. More than ever before, this year it’s important for staff and students to manage any hay fever or asthma symptoms, as these conditions can produce symptoms that are similar to coronavirus (COVID-19) such as runny nose, cough or shortness of breath.
The best way to reduce and prevent symptoms of asthma or hay fever and reduce unnecessary absences from school is to follow an up-to-date asthma action plan or hay fever treatment plan. If your child suffers from asthma please ensure you have provided us with an up to date plan now.
While it’s important to increase outside air ventilation and move activities outside where possible in order to minimise the risk of coronavirus (COVID-19) transmission, we will monitor the VicEmergency App and on days when there is a heightened risk of thunderstorm asthma, windows and doors should be closed and then reopened when the risk reduces.
INTRODUCING JAMIE SAGGERS - new Unit 4b teacher - Q & A
What is your favourite colour? Green
What is your favourite food? Laksa
What is your favourite book? Picture Book - The Day the Crayons Quit. Novel - Wonder
What do you do for fun? Anything that involves being outdoors - aerobics, walking Bain (my dog - there's a picture of him below), walking further without Bain (he wasn’t built for long distance!), kicking the footy and picnics (I love eating!)
What strategy did you use to help you cope during the recent lock down period? Hmmm, I tried a few. I lived in a one bedroom apartment during the first lockdown and didn’t have a desk space so used one of my couches as a ‘work couch’ and the other as a ‘relaxing couch’. Sounds strange - I know!
Has anything surprised you about AVPS? The number of children from other units that have approached me in the yard to say hello and introduce themselves. I haven’t had one ‘lonely’ feeling at Ascot Vale PS.
Tell me how you first got involved in with teaching. It’s funny actually... I chose to complete my Year 10 work experience placement at a child care centre, thinking I might like to be a prep teacher when I ‘grow up’. At lunch time on my first day, I called my mum in tears, exhausted from the chaos of the day. It was the longest, hardest week I had endured and I put the concept of teaching behind me. I finished VCE, completed my degree at Deakin University and realised I couldn’t fight fate. Now here I am, reflecting on 10 of the most wonderful years as a teacher.
What has surprised you most about working as a teacher? That every single student is a better drawer than I am!
What might we be surprised to know about you? I spent my childhood and teenage years riding and competing horses. I hate watermelon!
If you weren’t teaching what would you be doing? Hmmm... possibly a paramedic or a professional taste tester at the Cadbury factory (I’m sure that’s a role?)
Thank you to the Unit 4 parents and caregivers who joined a 'meet the teacher' remote session earlier this week.
Welcome to our great school Jamie.

BEING COVID SAFE at AVPS
AVPS is a Covid Safe School. Advice, guidance and support for managing and responding to coronavirus (COVID-19) in Victorian schools is ever changing. Only last night, the DET updated their school operations guidelines to schools in line with the recent reopening for the third step restrictions for Metro Melbourne. We will update our Covid Safe plan in the coming days to reflect any changes. We will of course communicate any to you as well.
In the meantime, below are some updated reminders and information (this is only a selection) for you under three of the four pillars to help you better understand the priorities for students and staff in Term 4 whilst reducing the risk of transfer of CV19 . Please read through these carefully as your help with a number of them will keep us all safe. Remember we are all in this together.

Please read through these carefully as your help with a number of them will keep us all safe. Remember we are all in this together.
BEHAVIOURS:
- Managing unwell students and staff - anyone displaying any CV19 symptoms MUST NOT attend AVPS. Even when a negative CV19 test is returned, you must not return to AVPS until all symptoms have gone. Please help us with this. Health care plans, where relevant, should be updated to provide additional advice on monitoring and identification of the unwell child in the context of coronavirus (COVID-19) - eg if your child suffers from Asthma or Hay fever.
- Hand sanitizer/ Hand washing - All staff and students must wash their hands as they enter building and classrooms and undertake other activities (eg before and after using play equipment).
- Mask wearing. Staff must wear mask unless they are directly teaching. Even then it's their choice if thy choose to. Students do not have to but can if they want. Students who show symptoms of CV19 during the school day will have to wear a mask while they are in first aid until they are collected.
- Mask wearing. Parents must always wear a mask when collecting their children. A small number of parents have not been wearing masks. We ask you to consider the health of other people and change your behaviors to reduce the risk to others (eg - if you are unable to wear a mask due to a health reason, please pick your children up using a vehicle.) Local police will continue to monitor drop off and pick up areas. Thank you to the majority of parents doing the right thing.
- Drop off - Yesterday there were up to 30 children and some parents waiting at the Moonee Street gates between 8.55 - 9.00. We are asking families to please stagger the drop off times. We would prefer no one lining up before 9am to reduce the number of people together.
- Please ensure your child brings their own wattle bottle to school. Drink taps are out of bounds, filling up bottles is fine.
SPACES:
- Outside learning is encouraged as much as possible. This has been evident in the past few days with nicer weather.
- Students should practise physical distancing where possible. Maintaining a physical distance of 1.5 meters will not always be practical in the school environment and may be particularly challenging in the younger years of primary school. In these contexts, a combination of health and safety measures should be utilised to reduce risk. Some examples include:
- reminding students, staff and visitors including through signage, of the importance of physical distancing where possible
- reconfiguring class spaces where possible, using all available space in the school
- marking the floor indicating physical distancing in appropriate locations
- Parents are not allowed on school grounds apart from the main office foyer. We ask you to consider a phone call or email rather than coming to the office to ask a question.
- School Grounds will remain closed to the public at all time. We understand that this is frustrating for some however reducing the number of people to our grounds reduces the overall risk to us all.
- Windows and doors are being opened at the start of the school day to promote ventilation within classrooms and office spaces.
ACTIVITIES:
- Transition - Kinder to Prep. Small group kinder-to-school transition activities are permitted in schools in both metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, such as parents, educators and children meeting a Prep teacher in a school environment. Group size should not exceed 10 people and no intermixing with other students at the school should occur. We are currently updating our plans to follow these guidelines
- Year 6 Graduation - Wednesday 9th December. Times and details TBC. Graduations are permitted face-to-face in Victorian schools. Students from the graduating year level and staff can attend in person. Parents/carers and other family members or friends cannot attend in person but may have a copy of the ceremony made available to them or an online broadcasting of the event could occur.
All schools are required to follow public health directions and apply the operational health and safety advice to schools during the graduation ceremony. - Camps and excursions. School camps and excursions in metropolitan Melbourne cannot resume at this time.
The Directions issued by the Chief Health Officer currently prevent students from moving out of metropolitan Melbourne and into regional Victoria for school camps or to attend remote campuses. AVPS School Council has recently approved a recommendation not to have a 2021 Camp as it usually takes a year of planning. We are exploring other ideas/ options instead for 2021. Camps at AVPS are planned (and booked) to resume in 2022; mirroring what was planned this year. - School Assemblies have resumed remotely each week for student and staff. This is keeping us all connected whilst we are apart more than ever at school. If this continues next year we will look to inviting parents/ caregivers to them.

K-P TRANSITION
In Term 4 2020, transition programs will be adapted to align with current health advice. The Department of Education and Training have outlined that while it will be reasonable for some transitions activities to be hosted virtually, we should consider equitable access in preparing transition to school activities and where possible, plan for supplementary face to face activities that could occur when restrictions have been lifted.
Currently parents are restricted from entering the school grounds.
With this in mind, AVPS is planning the following K-P transition activities in term 4, 2020:

With this in mind, AVPS is planning the following K-P transition activities in term 4, 2020:
- Publication of an Information Handbook for Parents of 2021 Year Prep students (on website and via email by 6th Nov) .
- Publication of 'A Day in the Life' video for transitioning kindergarten children (via Youtube by 6th Nov).
- Scheduling a remote 'Q&A' for 'First Time Families', which will be an opportunity for parents/carers to meet the staff and have questions answered (via Webex 11th Nov).
- Providing 2 x Playground (outdoor) Transition session for 2021 year prep students. Including an opportunity to meet the 2021 teacher at the December session. (Term 4 - week 7 & week 11 - Dates and session times to be confirmed)
HATS
All students must wear a sun protective hat in term 4, that shades the face, neck and ears for all outdoor activities, for example broad-brimmed, legionnaire or bucket. Students who are not wearing appropriate protective clothing or a hat may be asked to play in the shade or in a suitable area protected from the sun from next Monday. A copy of our Sun Smart policy is available at: http://avps.vic.edu.au/uploads/9/5/6/5/95656824/sunsmart_policy_avps_2019.pdf
PARENT OPINION SURVEY
Thank you to the parents/carers who have already completed the annual Parent Opinion Survey. This is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst parents/ caregivers. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, student engagement and experiences of remote and flexible learning. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
There is still time left to have your say, as the survey will be conducted up to Friday 13th November.
Please access this survey from the compass link.
DOGS IN SCHOOLS POLICY
Here is a reminder about our dogs in schools policy, which is available on our website and attached below. Given that community members are not currently allowed onsite, we encourage all dog owners to read our policy and also apply the following features as you travel to and from school and gather at gates:

- All dogs entering Ascot Vale PS must be on short leads (not extendable leads) that are controlled by an adult, not by a child.
- Dogs must be on leash at all times when on school grounds, not just during school hours.
- Dog owners are requested to always be mindful that children are the first priority in a school environment and that some children are unfamiliar with and/or afraid of dogs.
- Dog owners are requested to assess the demeanour of their dog before entering the school grounds and are requested not to enter the school grounds if the demeanour of the dog is not suited to an environment where children are present.

NEWS FROM THE SPORTING FIELD
You have all been invited to be a part of the AVPS Amazing Race!
Your mission if you choose to accept it, is to work together to walk around Australia! But you will all have to work together because a race is not a race without a little competition! Each cohort is competing against the rest of the school. Each cohort is going to work together to see who can walk around Australia first! There will be a Prep – 2 Team, a 3/4 Team and a 5/6 Team!
If every member of each team gets outside and walks/run/bike rides/scoots/skates everyday then you can definitely beat the rest of the school!
The average child walks 10,000 steps a day! That (roughly) equals 8 kilometres per day! If you are able to walk 10,000 steps a day plus use your two hours of exercise to walk/run/bike ride/scoot/skate as far as much as possible you could EASILY walk/run/bike ride/scoot/skate 12 – 15 kilometres a day! Which means in one week you would have travelled 105 kilometres! Now imagine if every student was to participate, you would smash all of the weekly goals and finish walking/running/bike riding/scooting/skating around Australia FIRST! So let’s put on our shoes, head outside and get moving!
Competition Rules
1. Move as much as possible during the day! Get out and walk/run/bike ride/scoot/skate as much as you can every day
3. Find a way to record the distance you have walk/run/bike ride/scoot/skate (google maps picture, fitbits, garmins, apps such as ‘Map my walk’, any way imaginable)
4. Fill in the AVPS Amazing Race Entry Ticket (a new one will be issued every week through Class dojo (P-2s) & Google Classroom (3-6s) and submit it to your Class Portfolio or Google Classroom assignment
5. Make sure your parents sign the AVPS Amazing Race Entry Ticket, relying on the honesty system so please only put the actual distance you were able to travel!
6. Submit your AVPS Amazing Race Entry Ticket by 8:30am every Monday morning. Class dojo (P-2s) & Google Classroom (3-6s) and submit it to your Class Portfolio or Google Classroom assignment
7. Watch as the marker moves further along the map in the AVPS Newsletter!
