COMMUNICATIONS - COMPASS
As outlined at the recent unit information sessions:

  • The school is in the process of developing a communications policy to clearly identify the processes used to communicate information to and from school.
  • This policy will include how Compass will be used across the school. We are currently transitioning towards fully integrating Compass at AVPS – this is a 12 month process (approx.) -we are almost halfway there.
  • What is compass? Compass is a comprehensive education management system with a variety of uses, for example:
    • attendance and roll marking
    • event managements
    • payments
    • calendar and scheduling
  • Compass mobile apps are now available for parents/ guardians to use on smart devices. Computers / laptops can also be used to access compass in web browsers.
  • All parents / guardians are able to receive Compass login information now. Classroom teachers are available today and tomorrow from your eldest child’s classroom teacher between 3.30-3.35pm to give you your unique username and password. Due to privacy reasons we are not allowed to send these home with students. If these are not collected this week, we will mail them directly to you early next week. Please contact the school if you do not receive your welcome letter by the end of next week.
  • Prior to Compass we had / or have a variety of methods to communicate to and from school, including email, text messaging, phone messages, face-to-face meetings & website. Compass promises to bring about improvements to the manner in which we communicate.
  • In this transition stage we will send both email alerts and compass alerts.
  •  Please see the Compass guide for parents and families is attached below. A copy of the has also been published on our Compass news feed today.

COMMUNICATIONS - CLASS DOJO
  • Some classrooms have also been using Class Dojo for sharing and communicating specific unit teaching and learning with parents, which has had a positive impact. This program will also be rolled out across all classrooms and units in the coming weeks to help achieve a more consistent approach to communications across the whole school.
COMMUNICATIONS - WEBSITE
  • Regarding our WEBSITE – please be aware the new website is currently in construction stage. Office staff will be updating pages including the removal of ‘generic’ images over the coming weeks.
  • We have a new Business Manager, Kylie Bonne, who is doing a fantastic job settling into her new role, despite a challenging building project. Kylie, Christina, Sue, and Michael will be learning how to use and update the new website over the coming weeks.
COMMUNICATIONS - PARENT REP
  • We are currently working out the most effective system of providing ‘parent rep’ updates. For newcomers to our school, these are regular updates specific to each unit sent to parents to help keep them informed, involved and connected to the school. We hope to have these updates up and running in the coming weeks.
PARKING AND DROP OFF
As outlined at the recent unit information sessions, reminders about parking and drop off zones appear in our newsletter regularly. We would like to point out, in particular, the following important requests to help keep our children safe as we have had frequent reports of these happening lately:
o   Do Not double park
o   Do Not park across driveways
o   Do Not undertake a U-turn in close proximity to the school

IN PARTICULAR - PLEASE NOTE – The Bank Street car park and laneway MUST NOT be used as a drop off zone or for completing U turns as this is a DANGEROUS  manoeuvre around small children.
  • We strongly encourage parents and carers to please follow these requests in order to keep everyone safe, particularly our children.
  • We encourage parents / carers to park away from school and walk a short distance while the building program is in progress.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Thank you to the following parent candidates (appearing in alphabetical order by surname) for nominating to be a member of the 2019-2021 AVPS School Council:
  • Benjamin Delaney
  • Rebecca Doherty
  • Kate Mohay
  • Richard Moody
  • Ebony Mychajlyk
  • Meagan Thompson

As we received six parent School Council nominations for four vacancies, a ballot is required. The ballot will open at 8.00am 7th March and closes at 4pm on 14th March, 2019. No votes will be accepted after this time.
AVPS 2019 School Council Election Process / Guidelines:
  • Brief statements from each of the parent candidates will be made available to the community via hard copy, email and our website by 7th March 2019 (at the following link: http://avps.vic.edu.au/parents--community.html under School Council.)
  • Ballot papers (as well as 2 plain envelopes) will be made available to all eligible voters, that is, parents or legal guardians of students currently enrolled at Ascot Vale PS. These will be distributed via students on 6th March. Ballot papers will also be available at the office window.
  • Each ballot paper will be marked with the school stamp, deeming it capable of authentication.
  • No campaign literature (apart from a brief statement) supporting candidates or groups of candidates may be distributed or posted in the school and no school resources may be used to support particular candidates or groups of candidates.
  • The ballot will open on Thursday 7th March 2019 at 8:00am.
  • Individual ballot papers must be received by the school in separate blank envelopes to uphold anonymity.  Ballots placed in a blank envelope must then be placed in a second envelope marked with the name and address of the individual parent/guardian.
  • NB, parents with partners, please use separate envelopes for the ballot process.
  • Parents or guardians wishing to personally deliver ballot papers to the school office may hand a blank envelope containing the ballot paper to office staff, who places it in the ballot box. In this case office staff marks their name off the register or parents/guardians are asked to print their name and address in a register of voters.
  • A register of voters will be marked off when envelopes are received at the office. Do not leave blank envelopes at the office without having the voter’s name marked off the register.
  • Ballots will be stored in a sealed ballot box until the closure of the ballot.
  • Please deliver or arrange to deliver ballot papers to the front office or post them to the Principal (Ascot Vale PS, Bank St, Ascot Vale, 3032) in time to arrive before closure of the ballot. Remember, the outer envelope must contain the name and address of the voter.
  • Voting is not preferential and only requires that you tick or mark the boxes of four candidates of those listed.
  • All parents and legal guardians of students enrolled at Ascot Vale PS are encouraged to lodge a vote at the office before 4:00pm on Thursday 14th March 2019 when the ballot closes.

CAPITAL WORKS UPDATE
Thank you for your patience throughout the project. It has been quite a challenging start to the year but we are all thrilled it is nearing completion.
The playground will be installed mid to late March. New garden beds are being watered daily in this warm weather and while they become established. Please help us to keep students off garden beds to protect the plants. Please be aware that we are going through a defects process and Sue and Michael are regularly communicating these to the building project manager and architect.

The oval is now available for use. Doesn't it look fabulous?! Moonee St gates have been installed and the Bank St gates will be installed in the coming days. Once the building program is completed we will trial locking ALL school gates from 9:30am until 3:00pm each school day, except for the main entrance on Bank Street (Office side). The reasoning is for general security to ensure that all visitors or school community members MUST come through the main office area to sign in and gain access to the school.  We will alert you prior to starting this trial.

MISSING BIKE / REMINDER TO LOCK BIKES
It has been great to see so many families taking advantage of the fine weather and  travelling to school in healthy ways, such as bike riding. However, please be aware that a student’s bike that was left at the bike rack (near the new relocatable classrooms / unit 6) is missing, presumed stolen. It is a FLUID Rapid brand and is a 24” size mountain bike with a serial number to identify the rightful owner. (see image below). Please contact the school office if you have any information about this missing bike.  Parents / guardians are encouraged to provide locks and remind children to lock their bikes everyday.

STUDENTS ARRIVING EARLY
There have been a large number of students arriving early to school without parent or carer supervision. It is the parent’s responsibility to care for students:
  1. travelling to and from school and
  2. outside the times of supervision before and after school
Supervision IS provided from 8.45am before school at to 3.45pm after school. Students must not be left attended outside of these times. https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/spag/safety/Pages/supervision.aspx#link37

CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS & ALLERGIES
At Ascot Vale Primary School we have a number of students with allergies that requires specific management. Some of these students also suffer from Anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction to a range of allergens. These reactions for students can be life threatening.
We ask that all parents and caregivers DO NOT distribute any food at any time without the direct permission of the regular classroom teacher.
Our ‘Celebrating Birthdays at AVPS’ guidelines are available online at
http://avps.vic.edu.au/uploads/9/5/6/5/95656824/celebratingbirthdaysguidelines2017.pdf

AMBULANCE COVER
Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other costs. Please consider this information carefully. Ambulance membership: http://www.ambulance.vic.gov.au/Membership.html

TAKING PHOTOS OF STUDENTS
AVPS asks that any parents, carers or visitors to our school who may be taking photos or videos (eg assembly, special events) to be mindful of their use of their media – particularly when their images or videos may contain other students, either directly or in the background. Please be aware that there are a few students whose parents do not give permission for their child’s images to be placed online (and that this permission is for the school not individual parents) and we must ensure this is adhered to. We therefore request that parents, carers or visitors taking photos or videos be conscious of this and not to post the photos of other students online, including social media sites.

LOCAL EXCURSIONS AND MEDIA PERMISSION
Next week, we will request via COMPASS, for you to fill in an online permission for both local excursions and media publishing.

Kind regards
Sue Osborne  & Michael Downing, AVPS Principal Team
NEWS FROM THE SPORTING FIELD
It has been an exciting and exhausting start to the year with students from level 3 – 6 undergoing fitness testing. Well done to every student who pushed themselves that little bit further! PE this year will be focusing on fitness as well as having a go at as many sports as possible, hoping to inspire students to pick up a sport after school. Certain classes have already been lucky enough to have enjoyed a Hockey Clinic run by Essendon Hockey Club and Hockey Victoria and a Tennis Clinic run by Maribyrnong Tennis Club and Tennis Victoria. All students who have participated gave each sport a go and I could not have been prouder.

On Thursday the 14th of February AVPS had our Swimming Trials, quite a few eager students and parents braced the cold and tried their hardest, swimming freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and a few brave faces even tried butterfly in a 50-meter pool. Massive congratulations to every student who participated you should feel very proud of yourselves. Those who were selected to be a part of the District Swimming Team will be heading to Queens Park Outdoor Pool on the 1st of March to represent our School. The bus leaves at 9:05am, please be on time so that we can get to the pool in time for the first event. Remember to say good luck to all of the students who are going!

All information regarding District events will be on the window out the front of Unit 4, if parents would like to know the approximate time that their child will be competing.
PARENT REP MEETING & FUNDRAISING

PARENT REP
A Parent Rep Meeting will be held this Friday 1st March after Fresh Fruit Friday (FFF) duty, come along if you are interested in becoming a parent rep or just want to find out more about it. Please come to the hall kitchen - meeting venue TBC then. All parents on duty MUST sign in at the office.

It is Unit 1's turn  to cut fruit this week. Please meet in the hall kitchen after the 9:00am bell to help cut and deliver the fruit. Please sign in at the office before coming to help in the kitchen. Thanks.

FUNDRAISING
Our first fundraising event for this year is "Ice Cream Birthday Cards"
Everyone needs a stash of birthday card in their cupboard! So why not have some original art on the card created by your child/children. The children have all created Ice Cream drawings in the Art room and these images will be professional printed onto cards for you to use as a Birthday card.
Your child's name, unit and the words "I scream Happy Birthday to you" will be printed on the back of the card.
Inside the card will be blank for you to write whatever you like.
Order forms have been sent home with the eldest child if you need more please scan the form, print the order form from the newsletter (link is below) or see the office for more.
If you would like to view your child's work before purchasing the cards please feel free to pop into the  Art room to have a look or just trust that your child has created an amazing one of a kind masterpiece.

PARKING REMINDER –DROP OFF ZONES
Parents/visitors are reminded to please follow the  Moonee Valley City Council’s (MVCC) rules and regulations pertaining to parking and the drop off zone near our school. Some parents/visitors have been observed leaving their cars in the drop off zones, which impacts the efficiency of the drop off system and deems drivers at risk of being fined. MVCC parking officers regularly monitor these zones and issue fines for breaches of the rules. To ensure the zones work effectively, drivers should:
  • ask your child to head straight to the pick up zone once the bell rings –they will then be ready and waiting once you arrive
  • plan to arrive after the bell rings, not before, as you cannot wait in the zone
  • remain in your vehicle at all times
  • move forward to join the queue so that other cars can move into the zone
  • use the handbrake when the vehicle is stationary
  • not double park
  • not park across a pedestrian crossing or driveway
  • not undertake a U-turn in close proximity to the school
  • not use the staff car park as a drop off zone

What does the no parking sign mean?
It means that you cannot park in the zone during the times identified on the sign as it is to be used only as a pick up or drop off zone during those times.

You can only stay in this zone for two minutes. If you overstay this time
limit, you could receive an infringement.
Please help by following these guidelines

THANK YOU AVPS FROM ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOUP VAN
AVPS received this lovely thank you letter in January from the St Vincent de Paul Soup Van in response to the generosity of our community raising $900 towards this worthy charity. Please read:

21st January 2019
Ms Sue Osborne
Principal, Ascot Vale Primary School

Dear Ms Osborne
I wonder if you would pass on thanks from all those associated with the Matthew Talbot Soup Van to the staff and families who again have generously donated money to our cause.
It was truly a fantastic effort.  All the volunteers feel very privileged to pass on to our clients, those good wishes and the fresh milk and produce we purchase with this very generous donation.
Margaret Gannon will be able to tell you what a difference this makes to so many people, fresh produce for January and February is a real bonus to people who have so little.  We will continue to help those in need with your support.
God Bless
Yours faithfully
Julie Limbach
