FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM

 AVPS COMMUNICATION
Throughout terms one and two 2019, AVPS staff and School Council have been in the process of developing a Communication Policy to clearly identify:
  1. the ways in which information will be communicated by the school to the community
  2. the most suitable avenues for community members to communicate with the school

A draft of this policy is now available, attached below. We therefore invite community members to please read this  and provide feedback to [email protected] by Monday 5th August 2019, in preparation for approval at the August School Council meeting.

This policy reflects major changes in communications that AVPS has adopted in recent times and clearly outlines that Compass is now the school's preferred method of disseminating information to the school community.

We remind parents / carers to please contact our office staff, Kylie or Christina,  who are more than happy to assist community members to use Compass effectively.

Curriculum News - coming soon
As outlined in our Communication Policy, information about classroom and specialist programs will be communicated via Curriculum News alerts. These will be located on our website and parents will receive an alert when all are available for viewing. Staff are making the finishing touches to these documents which we anticipate will be ready at the start of term 3.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE POLICY
AVPS has a new 'Attendance' policy (attached below) that outlines the key practices the school has in place to:

  1. support, monitor and maintain student attendance
  2. record, monitor and follow up student absences

'Compass' has significantly changed our practices in monitoring attendance and recording absences. This has led to AVPS identifying our preferred method for parents to report student absences, which  is to ‘add an attendance note’ on Compass.

Alternatively, parents may contact the school to report an absence by phone or in person to report a student absence before 9:30 am.

All other methods for reporting student absences, including emailing the school or staff member’s account or using Class Dojo, are not a preferred method of reporting student absence and are now discouraged.

PHOTOGRAPH PERMISSION FORM
Stemming from our new communication policy, AVPS now has an updated photograph permission process to reflect new practices. As such, we are requesting parents / carers return the permission page of the form attached below (noting that this will also be sent home in hard copy today), indicating whether or not permission is granted for the school to:

  • Use your child's image within the school community and/or
  • Use your child's image in publications /locations that are publicly accessible

Please find more information in the document below and return the form (that will be distributed to you in hard copy today) to your child's teacher or the office by the end of week 1, term 3 - Friday 19th July.

STUDENT REPORTS
Semester 1 reports will be available for parents/carers to DOWNLOAD via COMPASS on the last day of term 2, Friday 28th June 2019. Instructions on how to access your child's report will be sent to you via the COMPASS news feed tomorrow. Hard copy reports will no longer be distributed.

Please find a 'Parenting Ideas' tip sheet
attached: 'Reading your child's report'  by Michael Grose. This is designed to help parents/carers  adopt a positive mindset prior to reading and /or discussing your child's report.

In addition, here are some TOP TIPS from our very own resident AVPS experts  to promote a positive mindset during student report and parent teacher interview time.
  • June reports are the first 6 months of a 12 month journey (spanning a thirteen year odyssey!!); there will be time for growth on the horizon. Children sometimes need time to consolidate their learning.
  • Focus on 'learning' rather than 'results'. i.e. 'What did they/you learn?' rather than 'What result did they/you get?'
  • Try to read the comments first, then look at the dots.
  • Remember, a dot (just like an Atar score) does not define a child.
  • Try not to compare your child's report with another child's report.
  • The most important questions are: 'Are they happy? and Are they learning?'
  • If 'No', ask: 'How can we work together with the school to improve this?'
  • Seek advice or support from Sue or Michael if you have tricky questions about your child's report; we are here to help.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS (PTI)

Parent Teacher Interviews will be held across two afternoon/evenings in the first week of term 3.
Wednesday 17th July 3.45pm - 7.30pm and Thursday 18th July 3.45pm - 5.00pm.
We are using  COMPASS for the first time to book PTI's. Instructions on how to book were provided via the COMPASS news feed on Monday 24th June.  Interpreters can be requested via the booking site.

REMINDER: You must have access to COMPASS to access your child's report as well as book Parent Teacher Interviews. Please contact the office if you require your username/login information, ASAP  Parents without access to the internet or devices, please see the office to arrange a hard copy report and/or book an interview.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT NIGHT
Thank you to School Councillors and visitors who attended or presented at our Annual Report meeting last Monday night, which was a fitting celebration of the school's achievements over the past 18 or so months.  Feedback from our visitors suggested it was well worth coming out on a cold winters night to find out what goes on behind the scenes at AVPS. Their quotes include: "That was the best AGM I've ever been to!" &  "Every parent should come to this- I've learn't so much".

See our School Council President's report below for more details.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
On Monday 24th June , School Councillors presented our 2018 Annual Report Meeting.  2018 was a year of many highlights worth celebrating, including the commencement of our Capital Works Project which I think you'll agree has resulted in the most beautiful school grounds.

Teachers worked collaboratively to implement HITS, which stands for High Impact Teaching Strategies.  AVPS had an excellent year academically and this is reflected in our School Performance report. Thank you to all parents who attended.  It was wonderful to have your support.

In Term 3, School Councillors will have access to the Draft School Strategic Plan which is very exciting!  Look out for an upcoming Vision and Values activity involving both students and their families which will be held in Term 3. This will help define the culture, beliefs and values that make AVPS the special community that it is.  Please come along to this meaningful activity and contribute.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy July School holidays.

By the end of this week all Prep, 1 & 2 students will have received their homework item for the holidays. I signed every prep,1 & 2 student up to the Melbourne Renegades Mascot Challenge, this is a program designed to help improve fundamental motor skills. Each student will receive a red soft ball for them to practise their throwing and catching skills over the holidays. Parents please try and set aside five minutes a day to help further develop your child’s skills. If you are looking for tips and suggestions all posters will be on your child’s Class Dojo.
Reminders
  • Please double check that you have given your child permission to go to the AVPS Athletics Carnival
  • Please make sure your child is wearing the appropriate footwear when they have PE

PLEASE HELP ISAAC SUPPORT A WORTHY CAUSE

Dear students,
My name is Isaac and I’m in year 6 unit 4, and I’m on a mission to collect plastic bottle tops. For my term challenge I decided to research about helping hands supported by Envision. They turn plastic bottle caps into filament/string that they run through there 3D printer to create prosthetic hands. So I need all of you to tell your parents don’t throw out the plastic bottle tops because I need you to bring them in and put them in this box. I am going to set boxes up in every classroom to collect them and at the end of each week I will come around and collect them from your box. But the bottle caps have to have a 2 or a 4 on them other wise the people who make them can’t recycle the other bottle caps. And before putting it into the box please make sure they are cleaned.

Thank you
Isaac

AVPS FURNITURE FUNDRAISER
As a result of our capital works upgrade, AVPS has a large amount of excess furniture or miscellaneous items that need to be 're-housed , re-used or re-cycled'. Items will be sold on a first come first served basis, most are available for immediate collection. Some items, such as the staff room and waiting room furniture will not be available until new furniture is delivered, in which case we will reserve the item/s for you.

Please also contact us if you know of a charitable organisation that may benefit from unsold / excess items. Thank you.
