CHANGES TO SCHOOL OPERATIONS
FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
CHANGES TO SCHOOL OPERATIONS
The Victorian Government announced that Victoria moved to the Last Step of the roadmap for reopening from 11:59pm, Sunday 22 November 2020. As a result of the changes announced, some important updates were made late yesterday to statewide school operations. The updated term 4 Victorian Department of Education and Training Operations Guide (25/11/2020) supports schools to continue to operate safely and effectively on site.
The shift back to standard delivery for so many school operations is a significant outcome that highlights how far Victoria has come on the path towards COVID Normal. Thank you for your ongoing support.
There are MANY changes, here are the key ones for AVPS, outlined below:
School Visitors - Starting Friday 27th November parents and visitors are allowed onto our school grounds, for example during school arrival and departure times. However, parents and visitors will not be permitted into buildings, except for the main office/foyer area or unless pre arranged.
Reminders for visitors:
Access to school grounds on school days - Starting Friday 27th November - Two additional gates will be open each morning from 8.45am, and afternoon from 3.15pm for the remainder of the year for families- Bank Street Carpark (Unit 3 Courtyard access) and Moonee Street Grass area. Therefore there will be 2 access points on Bank Street and 2 on Moonee Street. All external gates will be locked between 9.15am and 3.15pm each school day. Access to the school during these times is via the main office in Bank St.
Staggered Arrival and Departure Arrangements - Starting Monday 30th November AVPS will no longer have staggered arrangements in place. The school day will begin at 9am and conclude at 3.30pm for all students. However, students and families are still required to maintain 1.5 metres distance between each other as far as is practical at the start and end of the school day, to reflect CovidSafe physical distancing measures.
PLEASE NOTE, we are allowing one extra day (Friday 27th November) of staggered arrival / departure to allow time for the message to get through to families. We do not wish to cause worry or concern to children or families who may not be aware of the changes and may be deemed to be arriving late.
Children and families may arrive from 8:45am from Friday 27th and children may play in the yard rather than going straight to their classroom. The bell will also be reinstated from this day, indicating the time for children to move to their classrooms. Teachers will attend gates until 9:20am for the last time on Friday 27/11.
Access to school grounds after school hours and weekends- Starting Friday 27th November - school grounds will be made available for community use. Daily cleaning is no longer required.
Face Masks - Face masks are not required outdoors except where 1.5 metres physical distancing cannot be maintained. Teachers and education support staff are not required to wear face masks while teaching, but those who wish to do so, can. Teachers and education support staff must wear face masks in other indoor areas of the school when not teaching.
Drinking fountains - From today, Thursday 26th November all drinking fountains and taps will be reopened for normal use. All taps have been thoroughly flushed today in preparation.
Year level and inter-school mixing - Schools are no longer required to consider how students can be grouped separately.
Students with underlying conditions (such as hay fever or asthma) - If a student has persistent symptoms due to an underlying condition such as hay fever or asthma, the student should still be tested for coronavirus (COVID-19) if they develop symptoms that are different to or worse than their usual symptoms. Parents/carers should also consider getting a medical certificate from the child’s treating GP to confirm that it is safe for them to attend school with persistent symptoms that may overlap with some of the symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) such as cough or runny nose.
Year 6 Graduation - The updated statewide operations guide outlines:
Due to these statewide changes please note the following Year 6 Graduation arrangements will be implemented at AVPS:
OTHER END OF YEAR EVENTS OR LARGE GATHERINGS
AVPS will follow the departmental advice below:
AVPS is yet to decide on a format for celebrating the end of year.
However, the traditional Santa Assembly, which involves a gathering of over 300 outdoors will not be NOT permitted and will therefore NOT go ahead as usual.
TRANSITIONS
Year 6 to 7 Transition Day - Tuesday 8/12 is a statewide Year 7 Orientation Day. This event remains scheduled for Tuesday 8 December 2020. The updated school operations guide states:
Orientation Day events can go ahead in an adapted form. Programs must be adapted, with all arrangements in line with public health advice:
This is good practice to support students in their move from one year to the next.
YEAR PREP ENROLMENTS 2021 or STUDENTS LEAVING
To assist us with planning for the 2021 school structure, please finalise any Year Prep or new enrolments for 2021 as soon as possible. In addition, please notify the school if your child/children will not be returning to AVPS in 2021 ASAP. It is vital for the school to have this information now to help organise unit structures, budgets and staffing arrangements. Your cooperation in this matter is most appreciated.
KINDERGARTEN - YEAR PREP TRANSITION -Save the dates
We have one more after school, 30 minute orientation visit planned for 2021 Year Prep students to meet teachers and get to know our school grounds. Families will be contacted to confirm their child’s date and time. In the meantime, please save these dates for the next after school visit:
Tuesday 15 December OR Wednesday 6th December
STAFF NEWS
Farewell Alister (Unit 6b teacher) and Aimee (Unit 1a teacher), who will be leaving AVPS at the end of the 2020 school year.
On behalf of the AVPS school community We wish to thank Alister for his two year and Aimee for her one year contribution to the AVPS community as highly dedicated teachers in Unit Six and One respectively. We also wish Alister and Aimee all the very best as they embark upon new adventures.
Welcome Neville Stephens and Madeleine Thiele, who have recently been appointed to the PE /Family Leave and Classroom Teacher vacancies, beginning in 2021. We look forward to introducing Neville (PE) and Madeleine (Classroom Teacher) to our community in the coming weeks and again at the beginning of the new school year.
Absence. Sue Osborne will be taking four days of Long Service Leave next week from Tuesday 1 to Friday 4 December. Michael Downing will act on Sue’s behalf and Ben Kline will support Michael on these days. Our regular replacement teachers will cover Ben’s class for three days, noting that Ben will also be very close by to oversee Unit 2’s teaching, learning and student wellbeing plan for those few days.
2021 UNIT STRUCTURE
The 2021 Unit structure will be confirmed in the next newsletter. At this stage we are preparing for a 12 class / 6 Unit structure, however, we are presently finalising 2021 staffing and structure decisions based on projected student enrolments and very recent staff appointments.
REQUESTS FOR 2021 TEACHERS/UNITS
Please be reminded that the school cannot accept requests for teachers or units. The reason being, it is impossible for the school to satisfy such requests from everyone if this was to become usual practice across the school. It also sets parents/carers up for great disappointment if requests are made that cannot be accommodated. This is a situation we would prefer to avoid and therefore ask parents/carers not to request a particular teacher or unit. AVPS staff go through a complex and comprehensive process of determining individual and social needs of students in developing unit groups for the following year, noting our multi-age structure also encourages students and teachers to be together for more than one school year where possible.
Please note, students and their families will be informed about their 2021 Unit placement in the final week of term 4 and children will have the opportunity to meet with their new unit and teacher (where possible) before the end of the school year.
2021 PARENT PAYMENT ARRANGEMENTS
Please refer to Kylie's Compass alert sent on Tuesday 24th November, which outlines details about our parent payment arrangements for 2021. Please also find the year level payment schedules below. payments will be accepted in 2021.

Reminders for visitors:
- All visitors who are onsite for greater than 15 minutes will be required to sign in at the office during school hours (9:00am -3:30pm).
- Families will not be permitted to congregate at the school gate before or after school and will be required to maintain 1.5 metres between each other as far as is practicable at the start and end of the school day.
- Families are discouraged from congregating in groups inside the school gates on school days and are encouraged to limit their time inside the gates to 15 minutes on school days.
- School activities involving visitors must comply with gathering limits for community facilities (group limit of 20 people indoors and 50 people outdoors).
Year 6 Graduation - The updated statewide operations guide outlines:
- Graduations can occur at full capacity if they are exclusively attended by students and staff only.
- Graduation ceremonies, assemblies and other school gatherings (e.g. school sports) on school sites involving external guests are subject to a gathering limit (including students, staff and visitors) of 150 indoors or 300 outdoors, with a density quotient of one per 4m2 applicable to staff and visitors/parents.
- All schools are required to follow public health directions and apply the operational health and safety advice to schools during large events. This includes adults and secondary students over the age of 12 years wearing face masks indoors, practising physical distancing and practising hand hygiene. Face masks can be removed briefly for photos or giving a speech.
Due to these statewide changes please note the following Year 6 Graduation arrangements will be implemented at AVPS:
- Date change - The AVPS Year 6 Graduation will now be held on Friday 11th December from 9-11am.
- A maximum of 2 adults per graduating Year 6 students may now attend.
- Visitors must not enter any of our buildings, due to the density quotient, therefore the AVPS Year 6 Graduation will be an outdoor event for our family visitors. Please note, AVPS’s indoor spaces are unable to accommodate large gatherings to meet the density quotient of one person per 4m2.
- The event will take place inside the music room for students and staff. Visitors will watch from the deck area outside the music room ‘glass roller door’, which follows public health requirements.
- Visitors are asked to be prepared for inclement weather, as we are unable to accommodate parent/family visitors indoors.
- The Graduation ceremony will continue to be offered as a live feed and will also be available to view later.
- Full details, including ticketing information, will be distributed via COMPASS in the coming weeks.
OTHER END OF YEAR EVENTS OR LARGE GATHERINGS
AVPS will follow the departmental advice below:
- Face-to-face year level assemblies, graduations and other school gatherings can occur at full capacity if they are exclusively attended by students and staff only.
- Ceremonies, assemblies and other school gatherings (e.g. school sports) on school sites involving external guests are subject to a gathering limit (including students, staff and visitors) of 150 indoors or 300 outdoors, with a density quotient of one per 4m2 applicable to staff and visitors/parents.

- Students must be allocated into a single class-size group for the day (maximum of 30 people, including two staff).
- There are no limits to the total number of groups on site at each school. Groups may include students from more than one school. However, these groups must not mix.
- All students attending Orientation Day are required to wear face masks indoors (some exceptions may apply). This will be a new experience for Grade 6 students, who are not required to wear face masks in primary school.
- Peer support or ‘buddy’ programs are permitted from the Last Step and students from other year levels may take part in Orientation Day programs.
- Schools may hold transition activities in line with this advice on other days -- in addition to, or instead of, the statewide Transition Day, in line with public health advice.
- Visit a destination class/year levels
- Have an opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the following year (Voice) – hopefully demystify new routines students well before the first day of 2020 (the focus this day is especially for current year 1,2 and 4 students).
This is good practice to support students in their move from one year to the next.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
FINAL WORD FROM THE OUTGOING PRESIDENT
Dear AVPS Community,
On Monday 23rd November School councillors met via video conference for the last meeting of 2020. We reflected on the very unusual year that we've had and how 2021 will look with the need to address gaps in learning due to remote learning. Our upcoming AIP (Annual Implementation Plan) will also be adjusted to reflect this. Much time was also spent discussing the BYOD program for Grade 5/6 students. You may have seen from the video message yesterday, School Council decided to discontinue this program for grade 5 students in 2021. This decision was largely guided by the recent ICT parents survey results as well as staff consultation. There is also a lot of data which supports the move away from the use of ipads as the device of choice.
Monday was also the last meeting for me as a school councillor and SC President. I have been a parent at AVPS for 8 yrs in total and will feel very emotional when my youngest daughter Isla graduates. It has been an absolute honour for me to have been part of this beautiful school. The gorgeous vibe that AVPS exudes is akin to that of a little country school, but in inner city Melbourne. The teachers and staff are not only passionate and dedicated to student learning, they have created a welcoming community where everyone is embraced and encouraged to be who they are. A strong sense of belonging is fostered and celebrated and children of all ages and cultures come together in an inclusive space. It really is a unique and special place and I will miss it dearly.
I would like to thank Sue and Michael for 5 years on school council and for their professionalism and respect during our working relationship. It has given me a newfound appreciation for Principals and the challenging job they do to keep a school running smoothly.
I would like to end my final message with some thoughts on this year, drawing on our school values :
Respect – For teachers! This year I salute you.
Responsibility – Shown by students, staff and parents for doing Remote Learning
Excellence – Shown by everyone! For social distancing, adapting to Covid normal life
Empathy – For the kids who didn't get to see friends/family or celebrate birthdays.
-For those who lost their jobs/businesses.
Gratitude – For teachers. Again I salute you.
Much love and many tears,
Helen Millar
