MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
WELCOME BACK
Welcome to term three 2020, which is shaping up to be another exceptional term @ AVPS.
Sincere gratitude is extended to all community members and in particular, to our students, for persevering through stage three lockdown, which has been in place in the Ascot Vale and surrounding community for some time now. Thank you for being co-operative, responsible and adaptable. This is helping to keep yourself, your family and your community safe.
VIDEO MESSAGE
AVPS staff have prepared a video message for students and families to help welcome everyone back to term three 2020. This is intended to help refresh and motivate the children; to help them prepare for phase 3 of flexible and remote learning. The video also launched our #wevegotthis #AVPSinthistogether approach for term three; feel free to share the #.
This special video message to students from AVPS staff is accessible at the following link: https://youtu.be/jL7wGWkp4Bo
IMPORTANCE OF OUR AVPS VALUES
We recognise that this continues to be a challenging time for our school and broader community and therefore encourage everyone to draw upon our school values, located at the top of the newsletter, to help us all get through this together. AVPS staff have placed great emphasis on the importance and relevance of our values in their video messages accessible above.
Mid-late last term, staff planned to introduce a system to acknowledge students demonstrating our school values. We are pleased to announce that from this week, staff will be recognising students who display behaviours and attitudes consistent with any one of our 5 school values in a new way. This acknowledgement will be published to the family via COMPASS - parents will receive an email alerting them that their child has received a 'Values Acknowledgement' with an explanation about how. This recognition will be pinned on the students profile on COMPASS for 100 days.

REMOTE & FLEXIBLE LEARNING STRATEGY
Staff have been hard at work planning in teams and beginning the delivery of phase 3 of our Remote and Flexible Learning Strategy. Please find this strategy in full attached below, accompanied by a 'tip sheet' about balancing working from home with remote learning.
Our strategy has been duplicated below, which may be helpful for families who prefer viewing the information in a different language. Reminder: the language can be changed by clicking the 'Select Language' tab in the top left corner of the page. We have also added new information about face coverings.

VICTORIAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING ADVICE
Victorian schools located in areas under Stage 3 ‘Stay at Home’ restrictions have returned to flexible and remote learning from the start of Term 3. This is following the advice of the Victorian Chief Medical Officer in an effort to limit the number of people moving across our communities to help slow the spread of Coronavirus or COVID - 19.
AVPS TERM THREE STAFF AND STUDENT ARRANGEMENTS
From Monday July 20th 2020, until further notice or at least 19th August 2020, AVPS will implement the advice from the Victorian Department of Education and Training that: ALL students in Year Prep through to Year 6 who can learn from home must learn from home until restrictions have eased.
Most staff will be on duty, on-site at rostered times throughout the school week to supervise the care of students enrolled in the AVPS ‘On-Site’ Remote & Flexible Learning Program. AVPS staff may also work from home throughout their working week when they are able to carry out their duties effectively from home.
HEALTH & SAFETY UPDATE - FACE COVERINGS
In line with advice from the Victorian Chief Health Officer, the Victorian Government has announced that those in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire must wear a face covering when they leave home from 11.59pm on Wednesday 22 July 2020. Face coverings will be mandatory for people aged 12 and over. These measures will slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and help protect the community. In schools, this means that school-based staff and secondary school students in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will be required to wear a face covering.
All school-based staff must wear face coverings at school, and when travelling to and from school. Teachers and education support staff will not be required to wear face coverings while teaching, but those who wish to do so, can. Teachers should wear face coverings in other areas of the school when not teaching (for example, in the staffroom, on yard duty and when providing first aid or taking temperatures), and when travelling to and from school. Students who attend primary school for on-site supervision will not be required to wear a face covering. That said, AVPS would recommend if they can, they should. Students who are aged 12 by Year 6 will not be required to wear face coverings. The Victorian Chief Health Officer has advised that it is not practical to require some primary school students to wear face coverings while others are not required to.
From today:
The Department of Health and Human Services website has advice about face coverings, including:
AVPS IMPROVED MODEL OF REMOTE AND FLEXIBLE LEARNING – PHASE 3
Phase 3 of our AVPS Remote and Flexible Learning Strategy has been developed in collaboration and consultation with the AVPS teaching staff and the Moonee Valley Network of schools and is based on best practice strategies recommended by the Victorian Department of Education and Training.
As this is our second experience, we have drawn upon feedback from students, staff and parents, as well as departmental research and recommendations, to improve the delivery. We are grateful to the community members who responded to survey and feedback requests. Improved or continued features of the phase 3 strategy include:
LEARNING SCHEDULES
The Department of Education has outlined as a guide, the following learning schedules for Remote and Flexible learning for term 3.
For students in years Prep- 2, schools will provide learning programs that include the following per day:

Phase 3 of our AVPS Remote and Flexible Learning Strategy has been developed in collaboration and consultation with the AVPS teaching staff and the Moonee Valley Network of schools and is based on best practice strategies recommended by the Victorian Department of Education and Training.
As this is our second experience, we have drawn upon feedback from students, staff and parents, as well as departmental research and recommendations, to improve the delivery. We are grateful to the community members who responded to survey and feedback requests. Improved or continued features of the phase 3 strategy include:
- Online video check in times to be tailored and scheduled to meet the needs and capacities of different age groups.
- Consideration will be given to developing an online ‘help time’ session throughout the week.
- Consideration will be given to enhancing whole school sharing and connections.
- Opportunities for regular small group and/or collaborative learning time (e.g. structured Reading Groups). This will enable students to have more interaction and input online. Students and staff suggested this would be helpful via feedback forums.
- Learning tasks for students will include both academic and social activities, with emphasis on wellbeing and emotional support.
- Some activities will require online support or connection to teachers.
- Some activities will be undertaken independently offline.
- Some learning tasks will need to be uploaded or submitted to teachers.
- Other learning activities will be developed or worked on over time, without the need for uploading or submitting. For example:
- specialist subject and projects
- collaborative activities
- individual ‘passion projects’ focussing on student interests

DAILY SCHEDULES
A daily schedule about teaching and learning will be communicated for your child and will outline the suggested learning program for the day. It will clearly indicate when teachers will be available or not. Teachers will be available throughout the school day, however, be aware that they also have other responsibilities and entitlements (e.g., breaks) scheduled at certain times. Most teachers will be available from 9.00-12.30 and again from 2.15-3.30 each school day.
HANDY HINT: It is a good opportunity and practice for a student timetable to be developed and posted on the fridge to encourage your child’s independence and working for success
STUDENT ONLINE BEHAVIOUR / EXPECTATION
We continue to expect students to follow the school’s policies and procedures about student behaviour when learning in an online setting. We will respond to inappropriate student behaviour online as set out in the Acceptable Use of Technology Agreements provided or signed at the start of 2020. Students should contact their classroom teacher via the online learning platforms if they experience inappropriate behaviour online or if they are worried about something. We also expect students to:
• Complete assigned work to the best of their ability and in reasonable amount of time allocated
• Join and actively participate in scheduled video conferencing sessions on WebEx or Google Meet and follow all teacher instructions and expectations
• Listen respectfully to teachers and other students
• Respectfully communicate to teachers and other students as required: face to face, through comments, chats and/or emails
• Communication is expected to occur only during normal school hours between 9am and 3.30pm on weekdays only. Enjoy your weekends!
• Allow time for your teachers to reply to you.
• Students will not record any video conferencing sessions
PARENT/ CARER EXPECTATIONS

PARENT - TEACHER COMMUNICATION - preferred option
Parents, please contact classroom teachers via ClassDojo if you have any questions or feedback about the move to phase 3 of our remote learning strategy. Please also consider the sheer volume of messages that teachers will be receiving, especially in the next week and allow time for teachers to respond to you. Please also consider we will be holding parent teacher interviews starting next week, which will provide a timely opportunity for parents and teachers to ‘check in’ with each other. Please refer to the Compass alert for details about how to schedule parent teacher interviews.
LEARNING FROM HOME: INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND CARERS
Please refer to the document ‘Balancing online schooling and working from home’ provided by the Headspace organisation to assist learning and working from home. Distributed via compass alert on 17th July 2020. It covers topics such as:
Ascot Vale Primary School community now has the wisdom of the first remote learning experiences (phases 1 & 2), and are, therefore, more familiar with the environment, complexities and expectations to embark upon the second experience with more confidence. However, similar to term two, we expect phase 3 to be shaped by the adventures that await us. So, as time goes by, we will be open to improving the strategy even further and welcome feedback via ClassDojo or email [email protected] .
Thank you to the many of you who have sent the Principal Team and staff such lovely messages of encouragement. Please know how much the gesture is appreciated. We also thank you for your ongoing patience, kindness, support and understanding in this current situation and look forward to being able to greet you all again in person at school. In the meantime we encourage everyone to continue to be patient, be safe and be kind. We will continue to keep you informed about school matters via COMPASS.
And don’t forget: #wevegotthis #avpsinthistogether
