THANK YOU
FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
THANK YOU
AVPS staff would like to express their sincere appreciation to the parent /guardian community for your patience, perseverance, understanding and support, as we navigate our way towards phase 2 of our online remote learning strategy.
We particularly appreciate you recognising the sudden 'U turn' thrust upon teachers and the efforts they have made to date to develop a thoughtful, balanced remote learning strategy.
STAFF WRAP UP
AVPS staff have been working tirelessly and collaboratively since the end of term 1 to 'train' themselves and prepare for online learning. They met yesterday in a remote forum to share their teaching, learning and communication experiences of the week, in an effort to support one another, iron out difficulties and ‘pinch’ tips and ideas from each other. Features of the discussion and some key messages are outlined below:

STAFF WRAP UP
AVPS staff have been working tirelessly and collaboratively since the end of term 1 to 'train' themselves and prepare for online learning. They met yesterday in a remote forum to share their teaching, learning and communication experiences of the week, in an effort to support one another, iron out difficulties and ‘pinch’ tips and ideas from each other. Features of the discussion and some key messages are outlined below:
- The vast majority of teacher interactions with parents/guardians and children have been positive and supportive, which has been encouraging for teachers (who would never have imagined just a few short weeks ago having to teach in this manner.) Thank you.
- Teachers have greatly enjoyed reconnecting with students and families this past week and are looking forward to ‘ramping up’ the connections to online video conferencing and actually seeing students on screens next week.
- Teachers and Education Support Staff have greatly appreciated the comradery and support from fellow staff, who have been truly collaborative and helpful in their efforts to plan for remote teaching and learning.
- Teachers have found themselves being incredibly busy working ‘remotely’; some are even forgetting to take breaks – perhaps they need a school bell at home!
- ‘Flat chat’ was another way of describing teacher’s work this week, navigating: phone calls, dojo messages, emails, creating videos, team planning & support meetings, staff forums and attending pre-arranged professional learning, now all online.
- We’re not quite sure what we were expecting, but the thought of teaching without having students in the same room 'sounded' less demanding that it has actually turned out to be. Remote learning is incredibly complex and demanding.
- Year 3-6 teachers have been working together (at a frenetic pace) to introduce (and learn to use) Google Classroom. Noting that the 5/6s had been planning this in term 1 prior to COVID-19 but the 3/4 team have only recently (this past week) taken this on – the learning for staff has been immense.
- There have been hiccups along the way.
- Some teachers have found it highly challenging and uncomfortable to video themselves, but have met the challenge with gusto. The quote of the meeting was “There will be no Oscar nominations on the horizon at AVPS”. No doubt, these cinematography efforts will be greatly appreciated by the children nonetheless.
- Teachers have been impressed with the quality of learning outcomes already– eg, writing pieces. Children are still learning and thriving!!
- Sharing photos of home learning on Class Dojo has been a wonderful way to share achievements.
- Teachers view our phased remote learning plan as a very necessary ‘gradual release’ method, much like our instructional model in operation at AVPS known as GRR or gradual release of responsibility. There have been lots of moving parts to arrange for the home learning ‘machine’ to sync and this couldn’t be done overnight. It needed / needs to be introduced gradually, to ensure everyone is on board and 'included' rather than excluded.
- Please bear with us, work and learn with us as we figure out how to use and master new technologies including Webex (video conferencing) and Google Classroom.
- We expect teething problems, so please don’t panic if things (like connections) go wrong.
- Once we’re on the other side of this, some teachers unquestionably will not be leaving their current day job to take up desk jobs in front of a screen. We’re all looking forward to face to face teaching again ………one day.
- Our favourite remote learning viral video by far is this one: Click here for favourite viral video Sing along if you like - it may help:)
PHASE 2 REMOTE LEARNING STRATEGY
Teachers are putting the finishing touches on our next Remote Learning Strategy, which will be released tomorrow afternoon via a Compass alert and will, this time, feature the use of online tools - details to follow. We hope the transition goes smoothly for your family. If not, please communicate with the classroom teacher in the first instance and then school. In either case, please continue to be patient with us all, as we juggle lots of balls at once to try to make the systems work well for everyone.
LAPTOP and INTERNET PROVISION
AVPS laptops are now available for those families who have requested to borrow these. Admin staff will be phoning families who have not yet collected them to arrange distribution.
Unfortunately, remote internet devices are in short supply state-wide, so these are not available at this stage. We will contact families who have requested internet support as soon as we have information regarding availability. The Department of Education & Training will be prioritising Year 11 & 12 disadvantaged students and fire affected communities with their supplies of internet devices. In the meantime, AVPS will continue to attempt to source our own supplies for families who have made requests.
Families who still require technology support are requested to phone (9370 6507) or email the school at [email protected] . Please provide the following information:

UPDATED 24/04/2020, 11:30AM - NBN INTERNET ACCESS PACKAGE FOR FAMILIES
Shortly after the Ascot News was published on Thursday 23/04/2020, the school received information from the Department of Education and Training about a new NBN Education Package. In addition to the message above, please consider this new information below, which may provide a solution for families who have access to NBN and who also fit the criteria outlined below.
Additional Request from AVPS: Please email the school at [email protected] if you fit the criteria below and are interested in the Aussie Broadband service, as AVPS will need to register for this. Please title the email - Aussie Broadband request.
Please be aware that we are still awaiting news about the Department supplied portable internet devices and appreciate your patience with this matter.
NBN EDUCATION PACKAGE
NBN announced that they would be waiving access fees for internet service providers (ISPs) to enable the ISPs to provide disadvantaged families with internet access at significantly reduced or no cost.
The families need to meet certain criteria, including:
Advantages of the NBN Education Package
Having the NBN service will provide WiFi internet access to all students in the household. This is a considerable advantage over a dongle that needs to be assigned to individual students. Even though the dongle may be used for multiple students, the service will degrade considerably if this is done.
Accessing the Education Package
To date there have been two internet service providers who have established this service for disadvantaged families.
These providers are:
Superloop - https://www.superloop.com/education/. This service can only be accessed by the family.
Aussie Broadband - https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/. This service requires a school to register interest before families can access.
It is expected that other ISPs will offer similar packages over the coming weeks.
Any Associated Costs
If there are any charges for the education service, they are expected to be considerably lower than normal internet access packages.

COVID – 19 UPDATES
There has been no shortage of coronavirus advice recently supplied to everyone from all around the globe. Some of this advice has been helpful, some has been conflicting. What has been most clear is the direction from the Victorian Department of Education and Training: that every student who can learn from home must learn from home, based on the advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer.
We very much appreciate our community’s co-operation in following this advice or working with us to provide care only for the children of essential service workers or vulnerable members of our community.
Please access a letter to parents below from Jenny Atta - Secretary - Department of Education and Training. In this Jenny states:
In order to protect the health and safety of your children, your family, your teachers and the whole community, it is important that you follow the Victorian Government's direction and keep your child learning at home this term.
On site school attendance is available as a last resort where parents and carers are not able to put in place arrangements to supervise children at home.

SCHOOL PHOTOS and YEAR 6 HOODIES
We anticipate that school photo packs and Yr 6 Hoodies will be ready for postal distribution from the end of next week. A compass alert will be sent to let you know when to expect these home deliveries.
ANZAC DAY - think of William
As we approach, what will be a most unusual Anzac Day on Saturday (sans regular dawn services and public marches), please take a moment to reflect upon the efforts of one of Ascot Vale PS’s most famous past students, William Scurry, pictured below. William is credited with having inventing the ‘drip rifle’ (also pictured below) in the trenches at Gallipoli. Water from one container dripped gradually into a container below, which (when it was heavy enough) triggered gunfire, giving the impression to the enemy that the trenches were still occupied, thus allowing the ANZAC and allied troops to retreat, saving thousands of lives in the process. Pretty impressive isn’t it. This is why we have a commemorative framed photograph of Mr Scurry in pride of place in the school foyer and bring it to school assemblies from time to time to spread the word about the amazing feats of William Scurry. This photo display was presented to our Year 5/6 students in 2014 at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. We hope the school will be open soon enough for you to view this impressive photograph in person but here it is below for you to enjoy in the meantime.
Please also consider supporting this ANZAC Live initiative at the following site: http://www.anzaclive.com.au/
DETAILS: Show your support for our ANZACs at home. On Saturday, at 6am we invite you to light up the dawn at the end of your driveway, on your balcony, or in your living room to remember all those who have served and sacrificed.
Or use it for moments of personal reflection across the day.

DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT - DR MICHAEL CARR GREGG
The Coronavirus has turned our world upside down in a matter of weeks impacting many areas of our daily lives. This has resulted in the indefinite postponement of many special events such as school trips, milestone birthdays and sporting events.
Not only is this difficult for adults to come to terms with, but young people are also affected leaving many feeling overwhelmed and disappointed. Although disappointment is a normal part of growing up, how kids respond will determine the impact it will have on their future happiness. Adults need to remember that young people have a lot of choice regarding how they respond to disappointment. It is considered a healthy and positive emotion and essential to a young person’s emotional, intellectual and social development.
Disappointment can be a tricky emotion to deal with at any age. Therefore, it is important for adult carers to help kids manage their disappointment by recognising that their feelings are real and encouraging them to look at the problem objectively.
