We hope all the mums had a very happy day last Sunday.
Thank you to Sue Macaulay for co-ordinating a fabulous Mother's Day breakfast at AVPS last Friday and to her band of helpers in the kitchen and flower arranging departments. It was a job very well done.
Thank you also to Claire Collins for organising this year's mother's day gift; a beautiful canvas portrait. We hope there were lots of surprised mums on Sunday morning.

WELL DONE SOPHIA
Congratulations to Sophia (Unit 4) who attended a world acrobatics competition in Las Vegas, USA in March. She competed in the 11-16 year old acrobatic gymnastics competition as a 'flyer'. You can see her being tossed into the air (in front of all those judges!!!) in these amazing images below. Sophia and her teammates placed 3rd in the worldwide competition, which is an amazing accomplishment. We are all so very proud of her achievement - well done Sophia (and to her teammates for bringing her back to the ground safely again !!)

The session will provide an overview of how young people use technology and the risks they may be exposed to. Participants will be given practical information to support conversations and safety measures for today’s youth. Strategies for the safe use of the internet will be explained and useful links to the Office’s eSafety resources provided.

MOTHER'S DAY - THANK YOU
Last Friday was the Mother's Day breakfast and it was a fabulously fun morning. I would like to sincerely thank Bakers Delight Showgrounds, Melissa Whalen from Jeune Cosmetic medicine, Old Man Drew, Sis and I Hair and Beauty, Happy Apple, Kent Street Flowers and Liquor, Amcal Pharmacy and parents who donated to the hampers. It was a lovely to see so many Mums and quite a few Dads at the breakfast. I would also like to thank my band of wonderful helpers who prepared and served, arranged flowers, sold raffle tickets and help clean up. I could not have done it without you all.

If you have signed up for the Federal Election BBQ and cake stall, or are planning to bake for the stall, please read the information at the following links.
All baked goods are to be INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED or multiple small items such as chocolate balls put into packets and labelled with ingredients.
If you do not have wrapping or cellophane bags I will be at school on Friday wrapping and packing. Or you can purchase from LOMBARDS on Mt Alexander Rd.
Whole cakes can be made and sell well.
Cakes MUST NOT HAVE any cream or custard fillings or need refrigeration.

As a result of our capital works upgrade, AVPS has a large amount of excess furniture or miscellaneous items that need to be 're-housed , re-used or re-cycled'. We are very keen for these items NOT to end up as land fill, so please make us an offer or donation for any of the items appearing in the gallery below (click arrows to scroll). Items will be sold on a first come first served basis, most are available for immediate collection. Some items, such as the staff room and waiting room furniture will not be available until new furniture is delivered, in which case we will reserve the item/s for you.
Please see Kylie or Christina in the office to purchase or reserve an item, or call them on 03 9370 6507 to 'make us an offer'.
Please also contact us if you know of a charitable organisation that may benefit from unsold / excess items. Thank you.

NEWS FROM THE SPORTING FIELD
Interschool Sports
On Friday the 3rd of May, Ascot Vale Primary School played against Kensington Primary School, in every game all AVPS students were able to play well together and showed amazing sportsmanship!

For Round Two for Interschool Sports, we sadly had to cancel our game against St Mary’s due to poor weather conditions. This will sometimes happen during this ISS season, a big thank you to all of the students and parents for understanding that the safety of all students, comes first.
There is no ISS game this week (17th of May) due to the District Cross Country, student who were not chosen to be a member of the AVPS Cross Country Team will have classes as normal.
REMINDER FOR AFL PLAYERS:
Make sure you have a mouthguard before our next game on the 24th of May, or you will not be allowed to play.
District Cross Country
This Friday the 17th of May is the District Cross Country Carnival, all students who have been selected will have a meeting with me during Wednesday lunchtime to discuss everything they need to know and receive their District T-shirts. All information is posted on the window outside of Unit 4, including the potential track layout if any parents wish to know more. Parents who have students on the team are more than welcome to come and support the AVPS Cross Country Team and if possible help out with the event.
PE lessons
This term I have been able to organise a lot of special visitors during PE lessons, by inviting coaches into our PE lesson, I aim to provide students with specialised coaching.
Students who had PE on Tuesday the 7th of May were part of a single AFL clinic run by Brad and Muhammad from Essendon Football Club. The clinics focused on the main skills of handballing and kicking.
Students who had PE on Thursday the 9th of May were part of an AFL clinic run by Jessie from North Melbourne Football Club, Jessie will be running a four week AFL clinic, only on Thursdays. If your child does not have PE on Tuesday or Thursday do not worry, there will be more opportunities for them to have a special PE lesson further on in the term.
Prep – level 2 homework
At the start of the year, I signed up every Prep - Level 2 student to the ‘Melbourne Renegades Mascot Challenge’. The Mascot Challenge is a four-week program that will aid your child’s fundamental motor skills. Students will be issued homework during PE, which I will also publish in the AVPS Newsletter, so you know what is expected of them. Please set aside at least five to ten minutes every day to do the challenges with them, this little amount of time will greatly improve their fundamental motor skills.
In PE next week, every Prep to level two student will receive a red stress ball that is theirs to use for the challenge and to keep, please keep the ball at home as if it is lost at school I am unable to obtain another one. Below are the focuses for Week One and Two, if you require a bigger explanation they will be posted on the window out the front of Unit Four.

AVPS is accepting 2020 Year Prep /Foundation enrolments if Ascot Vale PS is the closest Victorian Government Primary School to your family's residential address. Please note, your child must turn 5 years of age by the end of April in the year they begin school.
School Tours:
We encourage prospective families to attend one of our school tours to witness Ascot Vale PS in operation. These tours are scheduled to take place in term 2 2019 and are tailored mainly for families seeking to enrol their child/children in year prep / foundation for the 2020 school year. However, parents of older students wishing to transfer to AVPS in 2019 or 2020 are also welcome to attend.

This will help the school plan for staffing budgets and class structures for the following year.
TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OF STUDENTS
AVPS requests that parents, guardians, carers or visitors to our school who may be taking photos or videos (eg assembly, special events) please be mindful of their use of media, particularly when this may contain images of other students, either directly or in the background. Please be aware that there are a number of students who do not have permission for their image to be published online. Please also note, permission to publish is for the school only. We therefore request that parents, guardians, carers or visitors taking photos or videos be conscious that they do not have permission to publish images and ask that images of other students are NOT posted online, including social media sites.
ALLERGIES & a reminder about CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
We have a number of students with allergies at Ascot Vale PS who require specific management. Some of these students also suffer from Anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction to a range of allergens. These reactions can be life threatening for some students.
We therefore ask that all parents and caregivers DO NOT distribute food at any time without the direct permission of the regular classroom teacher.

BIKES, SCOOTERS AND COMMUNITY SAFETY
Students and parents/ caregivers are reminded that bicycles and scooters are NOT allowed to be ridden on school property between 8.45-3.45pm. Bikes can be ridden after the 3.45pm bell as long as appropriate protection is used and that parents/ carers are supervising. We encourage students to ride to school however health and safety rules must protect pedestrians and our community members inside these times. Students have recently been reminded by their teachers. We ask for your help with this matter.

Parents/visitors are reminded to please follow the Moonee Valley City Council’s (MVCC) rules and regulations pertaining to parking and the drop off zone near our school. Some parents/visitors have been observed leaving their cars in the drop off zones, which impacts the efficiency of the drop off system and deems drivers at risk of being fined. MVCC parking officers regularly monitor these zones and issue fines for breaches of the rules. To ensure the zones work effectively, drivers should:
Drivers cannot park in the drop off zone during the times identified on the sign as this is only to be used as a pick up or drop off zone during those times.
Vehicles are only allowed to stay in the drop off zone for two minutes. If you overstay this time limit, you may receive a parking infringement.
IN PARTICULAR - PLEASE NOTE – The Bank Street car park and lane way MUST NOT be used as a drop off zone or for completing U turns as this is a DANGEROUS manoeuvre around small children.
We strongly encourage parents and carers to please follow the requests above in order to keep everyone safe, particularly our children.

- plan to arrive after the bell rings, not before, as you cannot wait in the zone

- not double park
- not park across a pedestrian crossing or driveway
- not undertake a U-turn in close proximity to the school

PSW UNIFORM SHOP
Our school uniform is supplied by PSW Quality Apparel. This is available for new purchases in the following ways:
- Online. To order online, use the PSW website, www.psw.com.au and follow the prompts.
- Our AVPS Uniform Shop, which opens in the hall/canteen area at the following times:
- First Tuesday of the month from 3:00-4:00pm.
- Third Tuesday of the Month at 8.30-9.30am
