FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
WE MADE IT!
Congratulations to the entire AVPS community for making it through to the final week of the 2020 school year. And what a year it was; one like no other, which will go down in history as the most challenging and life altering time of our lives…….. and we made it - well done to us all!
We admit, in term three we were not quite sure what term four would pan out to be like but we were ready for just about any scenario. Fortunately, we got to finish up the school year with staff, children and parents alike allowed back on site and it has been a real pleasure having everyone back into the fold of AVPS in recent weeks.
Thank you Parents
Congratulations and thank you to the amazing AVPS parents and guardians for surviving remote and flexible learning in 2020. You are the cohort in the community who have had the toughest gig in 2020 - parents of primary school or younger aged children. Hats off to you all for surviving the juggling act that was 2020. For those of you who are also health care professionals, teachers or other essential workers, as well as parents of youngsters (constantly giving care and guidance) - Bravo to you all. Thank you for a job well done and PLEASE enjoy some time to yourselves over the festive season.
Thank You AVPS Staff
Sincere gratitude is also extended to our wonderful staff, teachers and support staff alike, who have spent the entire year pivoting and transforming their practice time and time (and time) again. They gave 1000% to the children of AVPS and to each other in 2020 and for this we are most appreciative. At a recent forum, we celebrated a plethora of reasons to be grateful; the positives certainly have outweighed the negatives of the year. 2020 has brought the AVPS staff together, stronger than ever before and we are looking forward to energising and regrouping in 2021 with fresh eyes on what’s important.
Thank You School Council
Thank you also to our 2020 AVPS School Council. Once again, our school council learnt to adapt to remote methods of working together. We appreciate their commitment and flexibility throughout the year. We still have one more meeting left in February before a new council is elected. We will have several vacancies to fill, so please consider joining us in 2021. More information, including nomination forms will be provided early in the new school year.
Congratulations Class of 2020

It was particularly lovely to have parents on site to witness this event, which was also live streamed and recorded. A special ‘keepsake’ video recording package will be shared with graduating year 6 students later this week. The video package will include a special section of parting messages from the 2020 AVPS staff please access this section at this link: https://youtu.be/APw1egejDaE

2020 STUDENT REPORTS - available 2pm Friday 18th December
Our hard working teachers have been very busy over the past month rebuilding achievement data sets for each student in preparation for end of year Semester 2 student reports. These reports will reflect adjustments that we have made to our local curriculum programs in response to the needs and aspirations of our school community, and the disruption caused by coronavirus (COVID-19) and therefore, remote learning. This means that less curriculum content was covered than was planned.
Whilst these upcoming reports won’t provide achievement data/commentary across all curriculum areas due the periods of remote learning this year, progression points will be re-established to show progress in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. We have commented on student participation and engagement since returning from remote learning early this term. We have also included a NEW section titled 2021 Personal Learning Priorities (Catch up / Extension due to remote learning). Teachers have highlighted the individualised next steps for each student.
We consider it important to share our attendance rubric used to assess or describe the attendance work habit outcome, see below. It applies to on site teaching and learning only - dated from 12th October 2020.

TUTOR PROGRAM
The 2020 school year has been an extraordinary and challenging one for every school community. Many Victorian students spent much of Terms 2 and 3 this year learning remotely and Victorian schools and their communities have made an exceptional effort to provide continuity of teaching and learning to our students during this time.
During Term 4, schools across Victoria have been focused on supporting students’ mental health and wellbeing, in addition to assisting students to readjust to on-site learning. Teachers have also been focusing on assessing student learning, addressing individual learning gaps and identifying those students who need extra support for their learning, using classroom-based observation and assessments.
We know that the remote learning experience was different for every student. While some students thrived, some students may not have engaged as fully with remote learning. For most of our students, regular high-quality teaching in 2021 will be enough to help them progress to the expected level of learning. Some students will benefit from additional intensive learning support in 2021.
As you may be aware, in response to this, the Victorian Government is investing $250 million in the Tutor Learning Initiative to enable schools across Victoria to engage around 4,100 teachers as tutors in 2021 to support students who need extra assistance with their learning. Schools will determine how this initiative is best implemented for their students and will ensure that students will get this support in a way that minimises disruptions to other learning or school activities.
By engaging additional teachers to support children with intensive learning, classroom teachers will have greater capacity to ensure that all other students’ achievement, engagement and wellbeing needs are met, so that all students receive the support they need in 2021. AVPS will also be employing an additional teacher/s for (all or part of) 2021 to implement the Tutor Program. This position will begin early to mid term 1, 2021.Further information about the Tutor Learning Initiative, and how it will be implemented for students who need individual learning support in our school, will be issued before students begin tutoring in 2021.

PLAYGROUND UPDATE
As 2021 progressed our plans to upgrade the ‘Big Kids’ playground went awry. By mid year it was recommended to us by a DET regional staff member to apply for the Minor Capital Works funds as our project met the brief for applying. By mid July we had applied for the funds. Unfortunately we were not successful (we only found out the outcome last week). https://www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au/Pages/Minor-Capital-Works-Fund.aspx
Regardless of these setbacks, we will return to our plan, with support of the Victorian Schools Building Authority to upgrade our Big Kids playground as soon as we can next year.
HOLIDAY SECURITY & MAINTENANCE
Close neighbours and friends of AVPS are asked to please keep an eye out on our school grounds over the holiday period and to please report any suspicious activity to police on ‘000’.
However, please be aware that some tradespeople may have permission to be on site in the new year.
