FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
HAPPY WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
Friday 29th October is World Teachers’ Day in Australia; a day to celebrate the superpowers of the amazing educators in our lives. We are fortunate to be surrounded by such talented and dedicated teachers at AVPS, who have demonstrated their passion for teaching and commitment to our AVPS students and families time and time again in 2021. Don't forget to thank a teacher on Friday 29th October.
THANK YOU AVPS Teachers - enjoy this special day.
ARTIST THANK YOU
Thank you to Danni B, mother of Lydia (Unit 6) & Nicholas (Unit 4), a talented artist, who designed, and created fabulous art images and installed them at entrances across the school to warmly welcome students back to on site learning. These works are based on the Green Feelings from the ‘Zones of Regulation’, calm, positive and ready to learn. They are also inspired by the styles and images of the artist ‘Vexx’, who students have been exploring in Art during remote and flexible learning. More information about this artist for interested parents can be found here: https://www.instagram.com/vexx/
RETURN TO SCHOOL
It has been a pleasure to welcome students and staff back onsite to AVPS in a staged and considered manner over the past two weeks. This staggered arrangement has been very much appreciated, as it has enabled students to ease back into a routine that has so drastically been altered in 2021. We look forward to having ALL students and staff back together on Wednesday 3rd November.
We are also looking forward to recommencing a range of activities, consistent with Victorian Department of Education and Training advice, including school vaccination requirements. This means that from Wednesday 3rd November AVPS will be able to:
CELEBRATION OF LEARNING
Thank you to Jessie, Lennix and Harvey and families for providing (hopefully the last !!) images of home learning for 2021. These great pictures exemplify the amazing efforts of parents and carers and students to support the AVPS remote and flexible learning program for an extended period of time in 2021.
THANK YOU to all our amazing AVPS parents, students and families for your incredible efforts.

STAFF NEWS
Farewell and thank you to our 2021 tutors Ian and Anne-Louise who finished their time at AVPS this week. This year, Ian and Anne-Louise provided small group learning for over 60 students in Literacy and Numeracy. Both staff members worked with teams of teachers to support and tutor these students affected by Covid-19 lock downs last year. The learning growth demonstrated by students who participated in Anne-Louise or Ian's tutor programs this year was excellent.
TUTOR LEARNING INITIATIVE 2022
We are delighted to share the news that the Victorian Government is continuing the Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) in 2022. This initiative is designed to address the continued impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning and engagement in Victoria. The extension of the initiative will allow AVPS to continue to provide our students who need it most with targeted TLI learning support in the 2022 school year. Despite the continued challenges AVPS and schools across Victoria have faced this year, the TLI has ensured that students, who may have fallen behind or become disengaged, receive the help they need. In 2021, the TLI enabled Victorian government schools, and qualifying non-government schools, to engage over 6,400 teachers as tutors.
AVPS looks forward to continuing the TLI program in 2022 to provide small group learning support that will enable our students to flourish now and in the future.
2022 PLANNING
STUDENTS LEAVING
If you and your family (current year Prep to Five students) are leaving at the end of the 2021 school year, could you please contact the office now, by phone or in writing via email [email protected]
This information is important for us as we are now planning 2022 units and class structures.
UNIT PLACEMENT & a note about requests
Staff will begin placing students in classes for the 2022 school year in the coming weeks. As always, when the structure is confirmed, this will be communicated via the newsletter or Compass Alert later this term.
In the meantime, please note we are now seeking requests in writing for siblings to be placed together (or not). To ensure requests can be met, these are due by no later than Friday 19th November 2021. Please attention this information to Michael Downing at this email address: [email protected] Requests after this date may not be able to be met.
Also, please be aware that the school cannot accept requests for teachers or units. The reason being, it is impossible for the school to satisfy such requests from everyone if this was to become usual practice across the school. It also sets parents/carers up for great disappointment if requests are made that cannot be accommodated. This is a situation we would prefer to avoid and therefore ask parents/carers to refrain from requesting a particular teacher or unit.
During Term four, AVPS staff go through a complex and comprehensive process of determining individual and social needs of students in developing unit groups for the following year, noting our multi-age structure also encourages students and teachers to be together for more than one school year where possible.
Students and their families will be informed about their 2022 Unit placement in the final week of term 4 and it is planned that all students will have the opportunity to meet with their 2022 unit and teacher (where possible/available) before the end of the school year.
OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE - OSHC
Thank you to Camp Australia for continuing to operate a quality Outside School Hours Care program throughout the pandemic of 2020 and 2021. Not a day went by without an OSHC program operating at AVPS, despite heavily reduced numbers. Special appreciation is extended to program co-ordinator, Dee Seneviratne for 'being there' every day and providing quality and compassionate care for our AVPS students.
Please find an update from Camp Australia attached below and further down in the newsletter you can find details about how to enrol your children at our onsite before and after school program. After months of remote learning, it may be just the thing needed for busy parents and their kids who are well and truly ready to get busy before or after school in a familiar and caring environment.

Here are some important reminders about our SunSmart Policy strategies at AVPS:
Clothing
Sun protective clothing is recommended, including:
Children and staff are required to wear hats that protect their face, neck and ears, i.e. legionnaire, broad brimmed or bucket hats, whenever they are outside, from 1 September to 30 April. Baseball caps do not offer enough protection and are therefore not recommended. No hats, no play: Students not wearing appropriate hats will have to remain in the shade that is offered outside the front of unit 4 and 5.
Sunscreen

Sport & PE News from Neville
Athletics Carnival 2021
The good news is that after three forced postponements this year I have a new date for our Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival which is Thursday November 18 at the Aberfeldie Athletics Track. However there are still a few hurdles that need to be cleared first before we will be able to proceed. We obviously need to adhere to any government/council guidelines regarding the use of community facilities and these can change on short notice. Therefore I’ll be keeping you regularly updated with developments. I’ll also aim to communicate with you via Compass about the Carnival at the earliest possible opportunity so that you have sufficient time to give permission for your child to attend and make any necessary payment. Thank you for your understanding.
If we can not proceed on November 18, it will be highly unlikely that the Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival will go ahead this year.
Hot Shots Tennis
At the start of the year, as part of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Tennis Racquet Roadshow I applied to Tennis Victoria for our Prep students to receive their very own free tennis racquet. The great news is that Ascot Vale Primary School was successful, I actually got the confirmation email this morning (Thursday Oct 28)!! I’ve been told that we should be receiving the racquets by next week so I’ll put another notice in the next newsletter complete with some photos of some very excited Prep children!
For all Ascot Vale Primary school children, there is also an opportunity to register for a free trial of ANZ Hot Shots Tennis. If you are interested please contact Anthony Burke at the Maribyrnong Park Tennis Club on 0411 180 681. You can also visit www.mptc.org.au or scan the barcode in the picture below for further information.

REMINDERS
BEING ON TIME at 9
Being late to school impacts the child, the teacher and the class, not to mention sets bad habits that in some cases can be hard to break. If punctuality patterns for individual students occur, we will seek individual meetings with families, and together developing attendance improvements plans. Please ensure your child is at school on time. DET Every Day Counts - http://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/school/principals/participation/everydaycountsprimparent.pdf

Medical documentation is important to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all of our students. From time to time it is necessary to update student medical and home contact information. If this is the case we ask you to come to the office or write to us to alert us of any change.
ASTHMA CARE/MANAGEMENT PLANS
The Asthma Care/Management Plan tells the school how to manage your child’s asthma and what to do if their asthma gets worse. This should be updated and signed by the doctor on an annual basis.
