BOOK WEEK ART
Thank you to our art teacher Lucy, who has inspired the beautiful works appearing above and below, via her 'online' specialist art program. All work for both P-2 & 3-6 cohorts were inspired by the Book Week nominated book 'Your Birthday was the Best ' by Maggie Hutchings and the artist Wayne Thiebaud, who is famous for his delicious 'still life' sweets and pastries. WARNING - this artwork may make you hungry!!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
COMMUNITY MEETING
Thank you to the staff, School Councillors and visitors who attended our combined Annual Report and eLearning* presentation / workshop, held online on the evening of Monday 16th August, 2021. This was a nice opportunity for community members to hear from school council members about AVPS achievements and areas to focus on for improvement from 2020 to 2021, as outlined in the 2020 Annual Report document. This and other strategic planning documents are available on our website at this link: http://avps.vic.edu.au/school-strategic-planning.html
AVPS eLEARNING* PLAN
*eLearning is a learning system based on formalised teaching but with the help of electronic resources.
The AVPS eLearning team, Doug, Bridie, Neville and Sue, with some help from Michael, took Monday night’s community meeting audience through the school’s long term plans for eLearning from 2022 and beyond.
The team shared information about previous school council decisions to phase out the 1:1 iPad program in Years 3-6, with the view to moving towards a 1:1 laptop style program. The team is currently working on a proposal to put to school council at the September meeting for approval. This will include:
Participants in the meeting provided valuable feedback in break out groups. Their responses were captured in full, then transformed into word art. Word art captures words from a wide source of responses and displays the most frequently used words more prominently, giving emphasis to the important aspects of the feedback. Please find the word art response below from parents (1st image) and staff (2nd image). The eLearning team is also currently capturing student voice responses in selected units, as they did with the adults. All feedback from these activities will help the eLearning team guide the policy and proposal development. A draft of the Digital Technologies Policy will be shared with the AVPS community in the coming weeks for further input and feedback.

The latest Victorian Department of Education and Training school operations guide has been modified to match the current Victorian Health Advice. Here are some key changes to our usual CovidSafe practices affecting AVPS:
- Playgrounds may not be accessed by community members, however, children attending the onsite program may use them. Consequently, AVPS playgrounds have been taped off and school gates will remain locked; closed to community members.
- Parents who are essential workers, seeking to access the onsite supervision program for their children, must provide an authorised worker permit that has been filled in correctly, including names and contact details of their employer.
Whilst our gates are locked, AVPS neighbours are asked to please report (to the school) incidences of trespass or, in serious cases, please report to the police on 000. Thank you.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hi everyone,
School Council met on Monday (August 16) for a brief meeting. An extension to Melbourne’s lockdown had been announced shortly before we met, and among other things, we discussed the substantial challenges of remote and flexible learning for parents, students and teachers.
We also talked about the upcoming Pupil Free Day (was to be 30th August), which has now been postponed to Term 4 (date to be confirmed).
Following our meeting, Council took part in the Community Meeting (online of course!) – it was great to see some of you there (more from Sue and Michael, above).
I want to acknowledge that it’s a difficult time for all parents and carers, for teachers and for students. I for one am ‘over it’ – and greatly looking forward to a time when COVID is no longer impacting on our kids’ education, friendships and development. We will get there...
Go well, stay safe.
– Meredith (parent of Anna (Unit 6) and Iona (Unit 2))

REPEAT OF COMPASS ALERT
RE: Remote and Flexible Learning Program feedback
- sent Thursday 19/08/2021
Hello
Thanks for your feedback and I hope this finds you and your family well.
We have shared feedback with team leaders (Jamie, Ben, Annie and Lucy) for their consideration for adapting the remote and flexible program over time. We had a productive conversation and 'idea share time' with leaders about addressing concerns. Team leaders either will or have already met with their teams to confirm some solutions and will communicate these via their usual channels with parents/carers. Leaders will meet again next week to monitor the program.
The positive manner in which concerns were raised by parents, (balanced with empathy & gratitude) was noted, acknowledged and appreciated by all at Wednesday’s team leader meeting.
We thank parents and carers for your perseverance, positive feedback and approach to this situation we are in. Long term lockdown certainly was not a place we were predicting to be in at this stage and we particularly acknowledge the extreme demands placed on families of primary school aged children.
Nevertheless, staff are working very hard behind the scenes, as well as on screen / in view and juggling shifts in the on-site supervision program, to adapt and respond to student and family needs on a daily basis. Staff are also doing an incredible job of remaining optimistic and solutions oriented, whilst managing their own personal and family responsibilities at home. These are indeed trying times.
The ‘seen’ image of the teacher’s day in remote learning on a screen is the tip of the iceberg in terms of their responsibilities and roles carried out. They juggle a wide range of roles throughout the school day, sometimes into the evening, for example: responding to student work submissions, attending to parent and student communications, conducting 1:1 welfare checks with students and parents, attending to admin, assessment, reporting and emails, attending to Class Dojo, team curriculum planning/review and attending onsite teaching and supervision program shifts.
Despite this, we are confident that the staff will take on board the feedback you have provided and do their utmost to respond as best they can, within the resources they have available individually and collectively.
Kind regards
Sue Osborne and Michael Downing

PE NEWS
PE and Covid
Unfortunately in our current climate and in lockdown, our normal Physical Education practices and opportunities have to be either modified for a remote setting or simply have to be postponed for the foreseeable future. As you can appreciate this has many challenges not only on myself as a teacher but also on yourselves and your children. However despite the challenges that face us all, I am committed to provide the best possible experience and learning for your children, as I’ve always been.
Run/Walk e-Challenge around Australia
This week we started our AVPS Run/Walk e-Challenge around Australia. This is a virtual challenge where all AVPS community members (children, parents, staff) are asked to either run or walk each day until Friday September 10. This can be done at your home, around your local neighbourhood or even in your local park. Just make sure you stay within the current 5km radius from your residence! After your daily run or walk you are asked to submit your results e.g. how far you ran/walked in kilometres onto a website I have created. This website streamlines all the information and the submitting of your results (which is quick and easy). It might be worth your while to bookmark this website onto your devices for easy access.
https://sites.google.com/education.vic.gov.au/avpsrunwalkechallenge/
After starting off Day 1 at AVPS we have now ran/walked past Canberra and are on our way to Sydney (virtually of course). We have completed 690kms after Day 4 so keep up the great work AVPS and aim to run/walk at least 1km every day. I’m sure if we do that, we’ll run/walk around this great country of ours before September 10!
Winter Interschool Sport & Athletics Carnival
I’m sure you are well aware that we are due to have our Winter Interschool Sport Gala Days for Year 5/6 children on August 26th and September 2nd. These are now postponed. What is not clear at this stage is whether these Gala Days will be rescheduled for later in Term 4 or will simply be cancelled. This decision will be made at our next Ascot Vale District Schools Meeting and naturally I’ll communicate the outcome to you at the earliest possible opportunity.
The AVPS Athletics Carnival is currently due to be held on Monday September 6. This is only two school days after the lockdown is due to end on Thursday September 2. The likelihood that this will need to be postponed and rescheduled for a date in Term 4 is extremely high. I will make a decision on this next week and will communicate the details to you at the earliest opportunity.
The Ascot Vale District Athletics Carnival is currently due to be held on Monday September 13 but this too looks extremely likely to be postponed/rescheduled or even cancelled. As stated earlier whatever decision is made at the next Ascot Vale District Schools Meeting will be communicated to you at the earliest opportunity.
Smiling Mind Mindfulness Meditation
Every school day of lockdown at 1:55pm I hold a 10-15min Smiling Mind mindfulness meditation session via Webex. I hold these so it gives the children an opportunity to rest and relax their mind and body after a day of online learning. Parents, staff and other AVPS community members are also welcome to join in if they wish.

REMINDERS
BEING ON TIME at 9
Being late to school impacts the child, the teacher and the class, not to mention sets bad habits that in some cases can be hard to break. If punctuality patterns for individual students occur, we will seek individual meetings with families, and together developing attendance improvements plans.
