Welcome Back
........again
FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
WELCOME BACK (.......again)
It was lovely to welcome everyone back on site this morning (Thursday 18th February) after the three day school closure. Thank you once again to all school community members for your understanding and continued co-operation in following guidelines stemming from the Chief Health Officer of Victoria’s advice due to the recent community transmissions of coronavirus.
From first glance on Thursday morning, the transition back to school seemed happy and smooth. However, as always, please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance, if you or your child/children are experiencing difficulties switching back to the school routine.
Please also refer to the information below for more departmental advice and links to support resources regarding COVID-19.
UPDATE TO SCHOOL OPERATIONS FOLLOWING THE 3 DAY SCHOOL CLOSURE
The Victorian Government announced that students could return to on-site learning at school from Thursday 18 February.
From 11.59pm Wednesday 17 February, consistent with advice for the broader community, school staff when not teaching and secondary school students aged 12 or older, must wear a face mask at school, unless an exception applies:
Visitors and parents must also observe this guidance.
Thank you for supporting your children and our school staff this week. We look forward to seeing our students back at school with their friends and teachers, with school opening at the standard time from 8:45am tomorrow. Please note, two extra gates will now be open at arrival and departure times to encourage physical distancing and to avoid pedestrian 'bottlenecks' at entrance points.
The wellbeing of all our students is our priority and our school staff and teachers are here to support you and your family. Information that might be of assistance to you in talking to your child about COVID-19 is available. If you are concerned about your wellbeing or that of your child, please contact the school so we can talk with you about how we can best assist. Other sources of support include: Parent Line 13 22 89 and Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800.
The Department’s COVID-19 helpline is also available on weekdays from 8.30am to 5pm on 1800 338 663. If you know a family who speak a language or languages other than English and you know they would like further information, interpreting services are available by phoning 131 450 first. For families with a child with a disability, the Association for Children with a Disability (ACD) has additional information.
And, finally, a reminder that if you, your child, or a family member develops symptoms of COVID-19 you should get tested at a COVID-19 testing facility and stay home.
Each family should regularly check the list of public exposure sites in Victoria (where a person with COVID-19 has attended), and if anyone in the family has attended a site at the times listed, follow the instructions given.
Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or contact the school if you have any concerns.
UNIT INFORMATION SESSIONS
Thank you to our Unit 1, 3 and 5 community for participation in our online Unit Information sessions. It was nice that the ‘show could go on’ despite the lack of face to face connection (that we do much prefer in a school community). These sessions provided participants the opportunity to hear information from our Unit teachers and to ask questions to assist with settling into the new school year.
Thank you to our participants for the astute questions that came up in each of the sessions. One issue that was brought up at each of the sessions involved questions around how to improve the connections between parents, given the year of disconnection had by all in 2020. Strengthening connections is indeed one of our priorities for 2021, as such, we will be exploring ways to enhance community connection in a covid-safe manner in 2021. Watch this space for more information in the coming newsletters.
LEARNING STUDIO UPDATE
The Learning Studio has been out of action for some time now due to storm/water damage sustained in 2020. Subsequent works included repairs to the external roof and then significant repairs to internal walls, ceilings and carpet.
However……… the Learning Studio roof sustained fresh storm damage on the Year 1-6 students' first day of school (you may remember the volume of rain that fell on that particular day) Friday 29th January. This was promptly reported to the Department of Education and Training’s ‘make safe’ department, which activated a program to repair the damage. Roof tiles were replaced yesterday (17/02). AVPS is now awaiting a report from the Victorian School Building Authority regarding rectification to internally damaged walls and bookshelves.
We are eager to get this space up and running as soon as possible for the students, but will need to wait a little longer for advice about the new damage to the internal walls of the library.

TREE INSPECTION UPDATE
An arborist has been monitoring the health of all our trees for many years and, following an inspection on Monday, it was concluded that the following three of our trees had reached the end of their life and were posing a risk of falling:
These trees were therefore removed safely yesterday. These three trees had been showing signs of 'old age' prior to this year, however, on Monday they were deemed beyond saving and a greater safety risk than before. We therefore took the opportunity to safely remove them during the lockdown.
We will put thought, care and collaboration with children into choosing appropriate replacement plants for these garden spaces.
For example, the arborist recommends replacing the Almond tree near the new playground with a Crepe Myrtle – Lagerstroemia indica. We will consider this recommendation and the many different colour varieties in our decision making process.
Further pruning or removal works will take place on upcoming weekends. This will be conducted by the same qualified arborist and will include:

Further pruning or removal works will take place on upcoming weekends. This will be conducted by the same qualified arborist and will include:
- Removal of the heavy vine on the east side of the school grounds, near the sand pit, adjacent to the laneway. This vine was pruned heavily approximately two years ago but has grown back as thick as ever and is compromising the large cyclone fence along the laneway boundary.
- Pruning of the cypress near the flag poles. This tree will be reduced by half its height in an effort to allow the flagpoles to operate properly.
- Removal of ‘off shoots’ of shrubs that have sprouted up in various places they were not intended for. This is mostly along the Moonee Street boundary.
- Removal of Smooth Barked Apple - Angophora costa (click link for information) along the Moonee Street garden beds. The arborist reported that these trees will attain a mature size similar to the large Spotted Gum tree removed on the south western corner of AVPS in 2018-2019. We have concluded that these Smooth Barked Apples were planted in error during the 2019 upgrade, as the intention at the time was to avoid planting overly large trees along the Moonee Street fence line and thus to avoid a repeat of the problems experienced by the previous Spotted Gum. We will put thought and care into choosing a more appropriate replacement tree for these sites.

PARKING REMINDER – DROP OFF ZONES
Parents/visitors are reminded to please follow the Moonee Valley City Council’s (MVCC) rules and regulations pertaining to parking and the drop off zone near our school. Some parents/visitors have been observed leaving their cars in the drop off zones, which impacts the efficiency of the drop off system and deems drivers at risk of being fined. MVCC parking officers regularly monitor these zones and issue fines for breaches of the rules. To ensure the zones work effectively, drivers should:
TERM 1 ASSEMBLY ARRANGEMENTS
AVPS assemblies will be held on a fortnightly basis on Mondays in 2021 from 2:35-3:00pm, beginning next Monday 8th February with the Principals hosting. A schedule of assembly dates and host Units will be shared via a compass alert in the coming weeks.
TUTOR LEARNING INITIATIVE 2021
The Tutor Learning Initiative is designed to support students whose learning has been disrupted as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Schools must only use their funding to engage tutors to provide targeted teaching to students identified as needing support. The DET have funded us to support up to 45 students who have been affected by the Pandemic, during the remote and flexible learning periods of terms 2 and 3 last year.
As mentioned above, staff have identified students who fit this category and we are now in the process of triaging this list. The Pandemic has impacted us all, however our focus will be on the students who it has impacted the most.
The Initiative will be delivered in 2021 and we are now in the process of recruiting a tutor/s. We expect our tutor/s will start here by the start of March - firstly working with teams of teachers before starting working with students. The majority of tutoring will happen in small groups in classrooms. From time to time, there may be a need for these small group sto work in withdrawal settings.
We will be in touch with parents/caregivers of students who we deem meet the criteria later in February to give you more specific information about the program. <More details from DET can be found here: https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/tutor-learning-initiative-2021/policy
