FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
Dear Parents, Carers, Staff, and Students,
We hope parents and carers have taken advantage of the opportunities to strengthen connections with the school and teachers during our recent Unit Information Sessions and Meet the Teacher events. Please contact your child’s teacher if you were unable to attend; staff are keen to connect with all families.
One of the best methods of communicating with teachers is to make sure you are connected to ClassDojo, which has a helpful messaging function. The old-fashioned method of calling the school (on 9370 6507) can work as well. Please do this if you need help connecting with teachers.
We are looking forward to expanding opportunities for community connections via activities stemming from:
Our Japanese teacher, Sensei Andrew Truong has also been working behind the scenes to improve our international connections. Click on the Japanese tab below for more information.
Kind regards,
From the principal team

STAFF NEWS
FAREWELL
BEN KLINE Ben has recently been appointed to a promotion position of Acting Assistant Principal at Niddrie PS for the duration of the 2023 school year, effective immediately. This is a great opportunity for Ben but a great loss for AVPS and particularly for Unit 2a students and families. Ben's start date was negotiated to Monday 7th March, which enabled us to recruit a short-term replacement for term 1. Friday 3rd March is/was Ben’s last official day at AVPS for the 2023 school year. We will, however, be seeing him during the review period at the end of March, as, it will be fitting for Ben to participate in review activities, given his contributions to AVPS over the past four years. He may even slip into the official school photos. |
Congratulations and best wishes to Ben on an excellent career achievement. We have great confidence that he will do a fabulous job at Niddrie PS, who are most fortunate to have Ben as one of their Assistant Principals for the remainder of 2023.
Bianca Bertolacci will fill the unit 3a classroom teaching position three days per week until the end of term 1, supported by AVPS staff, including Sarah Ashton, for the remaining two days per week.
AVPS will follow a merit-based staff selection process (a ~4-week process) and appoint a permanent replacement for Unit 2 for the remainder of the year, beginning in Term 2. The outcome of this process will be shared with Unit 2b families once completed.
WELCOME NEW STAFF
BIANCA BERTOLACCI
Bianca will be teaching in Unit 2b until the end of the term at least. Her first day was Thursday 2nd March, where she had a valuable opportunity to teach alongside Ben to assist the transition process for everyone. She also met some parents on Wednesday at the 'Meet the Teacher' event. Thank you Bianca for visiting a day prior to your start date to help get to know some students and families of Unit 2a. We look forward to getting to know Bianca better in the days and weeks ahead. Welcome Bianca. |
KATHERINE ANDERSON
Following a recent merit based staff selection process, Katherine Anderson has been appointed to a 0.2 (1 day per week) ongoing Year P-2 Music Teacher position at AVPS. This position was created following the implementation of the 2022 Victorian Government Schools Agreement, where an increase in teacher release time was awarded and funded. Katherine is already a long serving member of the AVPS school community, having taught classroom music as an Education Support Staff member, alongside classroom teachers for many years. She is also a long serving woodwind tutor in our instrumental music program, MVIMP. Congratulations and welcome officially to the teaching team at AVPS Katherine. |
EMILY WALKER
Emily's position has recently been confirmed at AVPS, where she has been appointed to a Graduate Teacher position at AVPS for twelve months, following a merit based selection process. Emily teaches PE or Sport on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and she teaches in Unit 6a, sharing teaching responsiblities with Jason, on Tuesdays. From from 17th March 2023 Emily will also teach in Unit 6 a on Fridays. Welcome Emily. |
ZARA MASON
Welcome back to Zara Mason, a Graduate Teacher who completed her pre service teaching duties under the tutelage of Rozeena Sen in Unit 6b at AVPS. Zara has now joined the 5/6 team, teaching the older students in Unit 2b. It has been great to see Zara slot in nicely to the AVPS community after her successful teacher training experience of 2022. Welcome Zara. |

MOBILE PHONE POLICY UPDATED
The updated AVPS Mobile Phone Policy, found in the file below, was presented at the February School Council meeting, where opportunity was provided for discussion and consultation. This policy reflects the state-wide departmental policy, where mobile phone use by students is essentially banned in Victorian schools. It refers to mobile phones and any device that may connect to or have a similar functionality to a mobile phone, such as smart watches.
It was noted at the meeting that this policy is mostly relevant to Secondary Schools where many (or most) students have mobile phones, compared to relatively few AVPS students. Nevertheless, the increase of smart watch technology, marketed and provided to young children, is growing in relevance to this policy and needs to be managed and monitored.
