STAFF NEWS
FAREWELL
KIEDO BULL Kiedo shared the sad news for us that he has recently resigned from his position as a classroom teacher at our school, as he has decided to move closer to his wider family in NSW. This is exciting news for Kiedo and his young family. We, therefore, wish Kiedo well for the move north and thank him for his work, care, and dedication to his students, AVPS, and role as a classroom teacher throughout the 2022 school year and Term 1 in 2023. |
WELCOME NEW STAFF
MICHELLE RANGOTT
We are fortunate to have found a very suitable replacement for Kiedo, Ms Michelle Rangott, who will be joining us on the first day of term 2 for students, Wednesday 26th April 2023, following a merit based seletion process. She will be moving from another school to start in Unit 4B. We are confident that Michelle's experience, knowledge, and passion for teaching will make her a valuable addition to the Ascot Vale PS team. Kiedo and Michelle will have time together later this term to ensure a smooth transition. Please join me in welcoming Michelle to our school community. We look forward to working with her and supporting her in her new role. Opportunities will be provided for parents and carers to meet Michelle early in term 2 and we are hopeful that Michelle can visit students before the holidays begin. |
BIANCA BERTOLACCI
After a merit-based selection process, Bianca Bertolacci has been selected to join Ascot Vale PS as a teacher, replacing Ben Kline in Unit 2a. Bianca will start her new role at the beginning of term 2, on Wednesday 26th April 2023, and will work four days a week from Monday to Thursday. Sarah Ashton will continue to teach Unit 2a on Fridays throughout the school year. Bianca brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously worked as a Learning Specialist at Mt Ridley College in 2022, where she was a teaching and learning coach across P-6 year levels, also teaching in year 6 and 3/4. We are grateful to have Bianca join our team and we look forward to learning and working together with her. |
SWAPNA BALLIREDDY
Swapna has joined AVPS as an Integration Aide, following a merit-based selection process. She will be working in various units across the school, five days per week to support teachers to cater for students with additional needs. Swapna may be familiar to some students and families, as she completed a study placement in Unit 3 with Marg Blair Gannon in ~ 2020 /2021. We, therefore, welcome Swapna back to the AVPS community and look forward to continuing to work and learn with her. |

Visitors will receive information about AVPS and how to enrol from the tour guides, usually the Principal, Sue Osborne and/or Assistant Principal, Michael Downing.
These tours are designed to help visitors find out more about our school and to get to know us better. They are mostly suited to parents or carers of Year Prep / Foundation children intending to start school in 2024, however, any prospective family may join AVPS tours.

cultural diversity week
Thank you to our wonderful AVPS community for helping us celebrate Cultural Diversity Week in Week 8, Term 1. The children had a great day on Thursday 23/3/23, participating in a multi-age rotation morning and dress up day. It was fabulous to have parents visiting classrooms to help share their stories and experiences with the children. Enjoy the images in the slideshow above.
MINISTER OF EDUCATION LAUNCHES RIDE TO SCHOOL EVENT @ AVPS
The AVPS community enjoyed a special assembly in recognition of National Ride2School Day on the morning of Friday 24th March 2023.
Visiting Ascot Vale Primary School alongside Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack and North Melbourne Football Club AFL/W stars Ben McKay and Nicole Bresnahan to mark Ride2School, Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins said cycling to school was a great way for Victorian students, teachers and parents to incorporate active travel in their day.
Active travel to and from school is a core focus of the Victorian government’s Active Schools initiative which supports school communities to go beyond traditional physical education and sport to ensure it provides students opportunities to be active throughout the day.

You Scream, I Scream, we all Scream for ICECREAM!!!
The art room has been a delicious space this term with students getting creative exploring the theme of 'Ice Cream'.
We have explored different styles of art and mediums and looked at the artwork of artist Wayne Theiboud. We have studied every type of icy dessert across the different levels from soft serves to triple scoop ice creams, you name it we've drawn, painted, collaged and zentangled it.
Here's a range of beautiful works from Prep through to grade 6. Absolutely delicious 😋
Well done artists.

NIHONGO NEWS - 24th March 2023
This week, to coincide with Harmony Week, students from Unit 4B and Unit 6 learnt about the Hiroshima Peace Park and the Children’s Peace Monument and made Origami Hearts with the kanji symbols that mean peace and harmony 平和 (heiwa). They learnt about the Sadako Sasaki who was diagnosed with leukemia due to radiation from the atomic bomb and how she persisted to fold one thousand paper cranes before her passing. The Children’s Peace Monument was created as a tribute to Sadako and all the children who passed away from the atomic bomb. People from all over the world send in their strings of paper cranes to the Peace Park to promote peace all around the world. |
AVPS NIHONGO NEWS - 3rd March 2023
Konnichiwa to our parents and guardians,
On Wednesday the 1st of March 2023, Sue and I had a great opportunity to participate in a Zoom Call with the Katsuragi City councillor Mitsuno Shibata, English Teacher Ayuko Tabata and the Principal Yoshitsugu Toge of Iwaki Primary School in Katsuragi City, Japan. This meeting was the steppingstone to begin planning a cultural exchange. The cultural exchange will be online communication classes in Japan along with other methods of offline communication such as letters and gifts.
Founded in 1874, Iwaki Primary School is in Katsuragi city in the Nara prefecture. The school had 755 students enrolled in 2020. English is being taught by a Japanese Teacher and Assistant Language Teachers who come from countries where English is the official language.
We look forward to be working with Ayuko in the future. We also hope our Year 5/6’s will enjoy this upcoming intercultural experience.
For any future updates, make sure to keep your eyes on the newsletter for future articles.

mvimp - mOONEE VALE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
MVIMP NEWS - 24th March 2023
We are very excited about our MVIMP numbers this year. We have 72 students enrolled in the program which is a jump of 20 students from 2022! Hopefully that means 72 children practising at home and 72 students enjoying themselves. Thanks for your patience this term, we have had a few disruptions with tutor illness and an absence due to jury duty. Hopefully term 2 will be smooth sailing. Thanks, one and all for returning your contracts, excellent effort. Take a look at Jasmine, Hazel and Sophie who are enjoying a strings lesson with Les. I think they look very professional. Amanda McClure, MVIMP Liaison Teacher |
MVIMP NEWS - 3rd March 2023
Thankyou to everyone who has returned their MVIMP contracts. This is really helpful. There are a couple outstanding but I know that I am sure to see them soon.
For percussionists your drumsticks and pads should arrive very soon, they are on back order. I am sorry that some of your couches have been used in the meantime and hopefully this will change ASAP.
Don’t forget to remind your child to check their lesson time, it is up to them to leave the room and get to their lesson on time. This is a big responsibility and I know that teachers are reinforcing this too. Naplan planning has meant that some lesson times have been changed but our tutors are trying their best to accommodate everyone.
The long weekend is coming up and students who have lessons on a Monday (percussion, brass and woodwind) will have make up sessions.
Thankyou to Freya who played the French Horn at assembly last Monday, it was a sterling effort.
Please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
Happy playing everyone.

environment team news
Hi AVPS Community.
Congratulations to all of our recently elected Environmental Team members. The environmental team had our first meeting of 2023 yesterday and have some exciting news to share. This Friday, we are bringing back “Nude food Fridays” at our school. This means that students are encouraged to bring food to school in their lunch boxes without any unnecessary packaging such as extra plastic bags, wrappings or cling wraps, chip packets or paper bags. We encourage you to pack snacks and lunches in durable, reusable containers to reduce waste and help the environment. Additionally, this Saturday 25th March is Earth Hour. This is an annual event that encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30-9:30. On Monday 27th March, AVPS will be participating in Earth Hour by switching off technology and lights for one hour during the school day. Keep it green, Bella and The Environmental Team. |
