HELLO FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
Dear parents, carers, staff, and students,
Welcome to our mid-term 1 newsletter.
It has been a pleasure to observe the positive effects of our lunch time clubs and activities, which have expanded in 2024, and are now in full swing. These clubs and activities have brought a buzz to break times, offering an array of alternative options for children to participate in and engage with an emphasis on strengthening connections and confidence in children.
Here is an outline of our regular breaktime offerings:
LUNCHTIME CLUBS
In addition to the clubs above, the outdoor Play Pod, managed by children and supervised by Yard Duty teachers, is scheduled to open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is the shipping container near the lawn and basketball court, full of creative items for children to explore.
The Learning Studio / Library is also open during each recess and lunch time break as an alternative passive space for children to enjoy during break times. Children can hang out in this space to read books, draw, colour in or simply chill out on the bean bags.
We hope your children have taken the opportunity to consider visiting these spaces and activities during their break times and have shared updates with you about these programs. If not, please ask your child about their break time experience and encourage them to join in if appropriate.
An increase to break time activities has come about as a result of additional funding now being received for Inclusion and Wellbeing at AVPS from the Department of Education Victoria. Jamie Saggers has been appointed to oversee these aspects of our school; please find out more in her Wellbeing and Inclusion update below.
Kind regards,
From the Principal Team
Sue & Michael

THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
PART 2 GRATITUDE
This presentation from The Resilience Project focuses on Gratitude.
Gratitude is paying attention to the things that we have right now, and not worrying about what we don’t have. We practise this by noticing the positives that exist around us.
Research shows that practicing gratitude rewires our brains to overcome the negativity bias (which can lead to anxiety and depression) and see the world for what we are thankful for. It is also shown to broaden thinking, and increase physical health through improved sleep and attitude to exercise.
View Part 2 of the series here:
Part 2 - Gratitude: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh-martin/
Hugh shares a personal story that highlights the importance of paying attention to what we’ve got. He suggests writing a gratitude letter to someone and shares the positive effects this will have on your mental wellbeing.
There are many ways in which you can practise gratitude, for some ideas visit TRP@Home.

Wellbeing & Inclusion
We are delighted to announce the official commencement of Riley, our school wellbeing dog! Riley has completed her first two days of school brilliantly, engaging in various activities such as visiting classrooms, observing show and tell, assisting Sue in the principal's office and sitting with children during story time. She has also enjoyed taking brain breaks with students and engaging in general meet and greets around the school. We are proud of our students for following the three expectations we've been emphasising: giving space, greeting Riley's handler rather than Riley herself, and maintaining movement as they pass by. Riley will be back next week on Tuesday and Thursday, visiting different classes. While we may not reach every class each day, we are committed to establishing a routine and ensuring Riley's presence benefits our school community. Let's continue to support Riley in her important role as a wellbeing companion!
We’ll continue to post updates and photos on Dojo.

ENVIRONMENT TEAM NEWS
Next Tuesday the 5th of March, the school will be participating in Clean Up Australia Day. It is a normal school day, but time will be set aside for all units to think deeply as they engage in a lesson about ways we can help conserve our earth with a focus on plastics and the 5Rs- rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle.
Each unit will also be allocated an area of the school to clean up. The Environmental Team will sort the rubbish and think about ways to reduce our waste footprint. They will then discuss their findings with their units to get some input and then present a plan (to tackle this problem) at the school assembly. As mentioned by some astute Environmental Leaders today in the meeting, us teachers also need to step up and lead by example😀. A great meeting and I look forward to working with another enthusiastic and passionate group. Doug PS- students and teachers are encouraged to wear something green. |
sport & pe news
Last Friday our swimming team attended the District Swimming competition and had a very successful day! It was excellent to see all the students' enthusiasm and I was so impressed with their effort and sportsmanship in and out of the pool.
A big congratulations to Sophia and Edie on progressing to the Division level for their individual events. Also to our 11 year old girls freestyle relay team for also progressing to the next level. They will compete at the division competition next Thursday.
That'll be all for swimming for now. Cross country trials will be held during P.E. classes during week 8 and our summer gala day (for Year 5 / 6 students) will be held on the last Tuesday in week 9.
Emily :)
