HELLO FROM the principal
Dear parents, carers, staff, and students,
Re: AVPS Principal Class Officer (PCO) Contracts
After sixteen years in the AVPS Assistant Principal role, much thought and consideration, Michael Downing has decided not to seek a further 5-year Assistant Principal contract when his term is up at the end of the 2024 school year.
Congratulations is extended to Michael on a brilliant Assistant Principal career to date; I look forward to sharing our last six months of our PCO partnership, which will total eleven years together as a Principal Team.
In these circumstances, the Assistant Principal transfers to a Leading Teacher position in their school, so Michael can remain at AVPS in a different capacity. Michael’s 2025 role will be developed through our AVPS workforce planning processes that begins with staff expressions of interest in term 3. His role, along with the rest of the AVPS staff roles, will be published in December.
In further news pertaining to contracts, my own Principal contract has been recently renewed for a further five years. This is great news for me personally, as I get to continue the job I am deeply committed to in the school community I love with the people I am deeply connected with. I am most grateful for the opportunity to continue to lead the Ascot Vale PS community for a further term and look forward to the joys and challenges ahead.
Kind regards,
Sue Osborne

PART 5 – CONNECTION
The next part of The Resilience Project's digital series is about creating Authentic Connections.
Brene Brown, a research professor, defines connection as being the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued. Therefore, creating an environment where children feel this way will provide the opportunity to build important authentic connections.

STUDENT REPORTS / ATTENDANCE
Semester 1 student school reports are now available via Compass. These will provide a focus for the conversations about your child’s progress at Parent Teacher Interviews next week. Please be aware we use the attendance rubric below to inform our attendance and punctuality habit mark in the reports. Any attendance or punctuality that is below 90% is marked as needing attention.
Parent Teacher Interviews (PTI)
A reminder that PTIs will be held next week. Bookings have now closed however you can may still contact your child’s classroom teacher or specialist to find a place. You are no longer able to self book via Compass
Monday 24th June 2024 - 3.50-4.50pm
Wednesday 26th June 2024 - 3.50-7.30pm
U1A PTI’s will be arranged early next term when Annie returns to work. She will contact parents directly via Class Dojo.
Attendance / On Time at 9
Every day of learning really does count!
AVPS wants every child to achieve their full potential and we know that parents do too. There is a clear link between good attendance and educational achievement. If your child is not in school, and on time at 9, as often as possible, they will be missing out on many important parts of their education. Regular school attendance means your child has a better chance to develop important skills and knowledge to help them learn as well as social and emotional skills such as good communication, resilience and teamwork. It is a great habit to be at school, practising for later in life.
There is no safe number of days for missing school. Each day a student misses puts them behind.
If your child is sick, of course it is appropriate to keep your child at home, however, other days off school add up to lost learning and poorer wellbeing. See below:

Preparing for parent-teacher interviews
Our school’s values of respect and gratitude, help ensure a safe, supportive and positive environment for staff, students, and families in our school community. As we prepare for the upcoming parent-teacher interviews, we highlight and reaffirm our commitment to our 'Respect for School Staff' policy, attached.
When parents and teachers engage with each other respectfully, we can ensure that our interviews are productive, uplifting and constructive. Positive relationships lead to better understanding and more effective support for students. Demonstrating respect and gratitude also sets a positive example for our children.
Our policy highlights appropriate and unacceptable behaviours, and ways to raise issues or complaints respectfully. A respectful environment also ensures teachers feel safe - which everyone has the right to feel at work.
Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation, and for helping us uphold the values that make AVPS a nurturing and positive place for all.

What is iyarn?
iyarn is a digital platform designed to promote students' wellbeing through structured reflection and communication. It allows students to express their thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive environment. Regular use of iyarn at school encourages students to develop self-awareness, help-seeking and communication skills. Through class and 1:1 teacher conversation, students can gain insights into managing wellbeing factors that impact their lives, resolve conflicts and build resilience. Ultimately, iyarn promotes a proactive approach to mental health, equipping students with tools to navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom.

Why are we implementing iyarn in Years 3-6?
Our 2023 Student Attitude to School Survey revealed that, while 87% of students in Years 4-6 feel like their teachers care about how they are feeling, they didn’t always feel that a) they could talk to a teacher when something was bothering them and b) didn’t always feel like their teachers knew when something was bothering them.
What did we do with this data?
We created a student focus group, made up of 17 students: boys/girls from years 3-6. We shared the data with the students and discussed the survey questions. Small group conversations were led by teachers, where we asked students to share deeper insights into how they felt about sharing concerns with their teachers. Students hypothesized and made suggestions on strategies they feel could be helpful.
Unit 6B Term 2 Pilot Program:
This term, the Year 5/6s in Unit 6 have been trialing iyarn with great success. The students have completed weekly check ins, sought help from teachers using the ‘comments’ function, tracked their personal data, celebrated areas of strength and set goals to address areas of interest. Class trends in areas such as sleep, became whole group conversations. Students accessed iyarn-linked articles to learn more about the importance of sleep and the impacts of positive sleep habits on mental health. Following the trial, we surveyed the class to see if they would recommend iyarn to other Year 3-6 classes. The result was astounding – 100% of students said they would recommend the tool. Survey comments included:
Semester 2, Year 3-6 rollout:
Following the success of the pilot program, we have purchased an iyarn license for the remainder of the year and will be rolling the tool out across all Year 3-6 classrooms at the beginning of Term 3. We look forward to protecting time in our busy weekly schedules to complete wellbeing check ins and to learn more about the factors that impact our overall wellbeing!

- I really think that it would really help the other classes, I know a lot of kids don't like to say their problems face to face so it could really help kids if something is bothering them that they have a way to say something.
- iyarn has helped me keep track of how well I am doing in my wellbeing and shows me where I need to work on most. ▪ Because having a way to check up on your mental health is very important, and iyarn also has articles you can read. ▪ If something is bothering you, iyarn is a good place to tell someone without having to ask for help in person which can be easier for some people.
- I think iyarn would be useful for other 3 to 6 students because it allows you to have access to ways you can improve your everyday life and how.

Staff professional learning
Pupil-Free Day, 7th June
While your lovely kids spent the day at home, our teachers spent the day engaged in professional learning, beginning with an exploration of the Writer's Notebook, a tool designed to foster creativity and improve writing skills among students. We delved into the details of the new mathematics curriculum set to be implemented in 2025, examining its objectives and strategies to ensure a smooth transition and effective teaching. Teachers also focused on learning about a new check-in tool aimed at monitoring and supporting students' emotional and mental health. These days are really important for us as teachers as we continue to strive to support our students with their learning and well being.
Peer Observations
Within the last month, our F-2 team has engaged in our peer observation program. This initiative involves teachers observing other classrooms with a specific focus. Our focus was identified by students through Pivot, a tool where students complete surveys about their learning experiences, teachers, and classroom environment. Pivot highlights both areas of celebration and areas needing discussion. Our F-2 team found 'Think Time' to be a common area for improvement, so we centered our peer observations around enhancing this aspect of our teaching practices. This involves students being asked some of the following questions:
Ongoing Coaching
Our 'Teaching and Learning Coach,' Helen Harris, has been an invaluable asset to our school. Working with us once a fortnight, Helen has focused her efforts on improving our writing instruction, aligning with the priorities outlined in our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). Her expertise and guidance have been instrumental in helping us develop and implement effective writing strategies, fostering a more robust and engaging writing program for our students.

Mental health and Wellbeing
Dear AVPS families,
I would like to take the opportunity to reintroduce myself to our school community, especially to our 2024 Prep families and other families who have enrolled at AVPS in the last year. My name is Jamie Saggers, and I have had the privilege of working in a variety of classroom and specialist roles at AVPS since 2020.
This year is an exciting transition for schools in our region as we roll out the Department of Education's Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) Program. As part of this initiative, I have been assigned the role of Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHWL), a role which I will fulfil alongside that of Disability Inclusion Leader. Good mental health supports children in building positive thinking, emotional, behavioural and communication skills and healthy relationships with family and friends.
Within this role, collaborating closely with our dedicated wellbeing team, our focus will be on enhancing our understanding of mental health and wellbeing. This involves implementing strategies for identification, promotion, and prevention, supporting our staff in recognising and assisting students with mental health concerns and further developing our referral pathways for assessment and intervention. To be clear, the role is not one of counselling or diagnosing. I have included an image below to help summarise the varied layers of the MHWL role.

AVPS currently has many excellent evidence-based wellbeing practices and programs, including Respectful Relationships, The Resilience Project, Dogs in Schools program, lunchtime clubs and Zones of Regulation. This year, we will continue building staff capacity to implement these programs and monitor the personal and social capabilities of our students.
At AVPS, prioritising the wellbeing of all members of our community has always been a priority, and I look forward to learning, growing, and developing in this space alongside all of you.
Best regards,
Jamie Saggers

Celebrating Success: Insights from Our Annual Report Public Meeting
We are pleased to share the outcomes of our recent Annual Report Public Meeting, which took place on 20th May 2024. This event provided an opportunity for parents and teachers to come together to review and discuss our school's progress in the past year, focusing on the key areas of learning, engagement, wellbeing, and finance.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the use of the 'I Notice, I Wonder, I Suggest' data analysis protocol. This approach allowed participants to share their observations, ask questions, and offer constructive suggestions in a structured and productive manner.
The feedback captured during the meeting was invaluable, reflecting the voices of both parents and staff. The School Council (parents and staff) and the School Improvement Team (staff) are committed to incorporating this feedback into their ongoing activities to ensure continuous improvement of our school’s Annual Implementation Plan.
Additionally, we are excited to announce that brainstorming sessions for our upcoming 140th birthday celebrations in 2025 have begun! Ideas ranged from establishing a working team to holding a community fete, promising a memorable celebration of our school’s rich history.
We extend our thanks to everyone who participated in the Annual Report meeting. Parent input is valued in shaping the future of our school, and we look forward to working together to achieve our shared goals.
Warm regards,
Sue Osborne, Principal, and Phil Burn, School Council President.

Oshc
Our OSHC License Agreement with Camp Australia expires at the end of the 2024 school year. In such circumstances, schools are required to undertake an Expression of Interest process where Interested OSHC providers submit proposals, detailing their qualifications, proposed services, operational plans, staffing, pricing, and how they meet the selection criteria.
The OSHC Subcommittee of the School Council will coordinate this expression of interest process throughout term three to confirm our Outside School Hours provider from the beginning of the 2025 school year. This team hopes to confirm arrangements by early in term four.
The EOI process ensures transparency, fairness, and competitiveness in selecting an OSHC provider. It helps schools find the most suitable partner who can deliver high-quality care and services that meet the needs of the school community.

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
It has been a very busy time this term! The Environment Team are thrilled to announce that our school have received a 2024 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for our project, The Little Place of Calm. “Ascot Vale Primary School is one of 1,041 primary schools and early learning centres across Australia to receive a Woolworths Junior Landcare grant to help grow our next generation of environmental champions.” -Woolworths |
The Environmental Team have been researching Indigenous plants and sensory plants to use in the garden, and we have enlisted the help of two parents with gardening and garden design expertise to work with the Environmental Team and give advice when they are available. We have had initial meetings to discuss the site for our garden, and suitable plants to use. The garden will give opportunities for all students to learn about Indigenous plants and observe living things. The children and teachers are looking forward to getting their hands dirty and learning from this project – we’ll keep you updated.

Another new initiative is that the school will be raising money for a greenhouse through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). We have called our fundraising campaign From seed -to seedling -to plant -to plate. We are raising the funds to purchase a greenhouse to help us set up a propagation area as part of our gardening and Environmental Team programs. The idea is to grow veggie seedlings to plant into our established planter boxes to harvest (as well as flowers and other plants). The Environmental Team members had an idea to grow veggies such as cucumbers and carrots to add to the fruit that is supplied to all classrooms as part of 'Fresh Fruit Fridays.’ We hope to raise $1,500 .
MORE INFORMATION WILL FOLLOW AS TO HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED USING THE CODE. THE STARTING DATE IS SET FOR THE 1ST NOVEMBER 2024. I WILL BE DEPOSITING SOME RECYCLABLES ON THE WEEKEND AS A TEST RUN
The Environment Team have also been instrumental in helping to set up the Ninja Warriors to help clean up the school.
They are busy promoting it in their units, and so far, there have been many stealthy Ninjas collecting rubbish at lunchtimes.
GARDENING CLUB: Every Thursday, interested students have been gardening around the school. We have planted some herbs and other flowers in the garden boxes, separated some of the Lomandra and re-planted them, which will be an ongoing activity. The students love digging, planting and watering them in!
The gardening group have peeled lots of avocado seeds and they are now germinating in a warm, dark place until they start to grow roots. We will then plant them into soil, grow them inside until they are ready to plant in the school grounds. We think an avocado forest would look quite nice.
We also had two special guests, Lana (Lipi and River’s mum from Unit 1) and Simon (Lipi and River’s grandpa). Simon came in to share his wisdom with the students about growing avocados from seed.

MUSIC NEWS
mvimp - mOONEE VALE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
The MVIMP program is providing us with beautiful music every fortnight at our assemblies and the audience are loving it. Well done to all of the students who happily perform and a very special mention to Sam Popp and Patrick Quin for playing our anthem. They are doing a fine job. At our next assembly some of our cellists will be playing.
We would like to thank Janet Butler, our cello teacher for all of the hard work that she has done for the MVIMP program over the years. Janet has resigned and will be leaving us this term. Her work has been amazing and the musicians that she has taught and influenced have been very lucky. We will keep you posted about a new teacher in the very near future.
MVIMP camp will be in Term 3, August 6-9th. If your child has been invited we hope they are excited. Please stay tuned for more information over the next few weeks.
As part of MVIMP performances AVPS will be holding a Soiree on Wednesday September 11th. On this night every MVIMP student is expected to play with the support of their tutor. Put the date in your calendar, 6pm start. (TBC)
Keep playing everyone and don’t forget to bring your instrument and music to your lessons.
