NATIONAL TREE DAY
Express gratitude :)
Hug a tree today!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
NATIONAL TREE DAY - 2nd August 2020

To express gratitude to trees and all they do to sustain life on our sometimes fragile but much treasured planet, AVPS staff joined in the Planet Ark campaign to hug a tree. Enjoy our staff slideshow above.

Thank you Doug Skate, Unit 3 teacher and AVPS Environment Team leader, for encouraging us all to #HugaTreeforNTD in his recent assembly video clip  (accessible below). Students are encouraged to join in and send their photos to the email address in the compass alert. These will be published in our next newsletter and/or featured in our next video assembly.

STAY CONNECTED
We are encouraging children to stay connected to AVPS as much as possible during the Melbourne- wide stage four lock down.

Teachers will continue to provide opportunities for children to connect on a more social level via webex or google meets.

We also ask parents / guardians to help make our AVPS produced videos available for children to view:
  • Bed time stories are available towards the bottom of the newsletter page of our website here (with more to be released in the coming weeks)
  • Also, please click on the buttons below to access recent whole school video productions for children to enjoy
AVPS Video Assembly 4th August 2020
welcome to term three - staff greetings
PLEASE CONTRIBUTE TO OUR TERM THREE ASSEMBLIES
All AVPS students are encouraged to contribute to our fortnightly assemblies by submitting videos or photos to share across the school.

Parents/guardians are reminded  that the following script needs to be received to permit images/videos to be used:
PERMISSION STATEMENT: I give permission for Ascot Vale PS to use my child’s image and video recording, contained in the attached file, in a school video publication to be produced and uploaded to YouTube as an unlisted* video and distributed within the school community via compass, email and/or ClassDojo. I understand the link to this publication containing my child’s image and video recording may also be shared publically, beyond the initial school wide distribution. I have also read, understood and agree to the Victorian Department of Education and Training statements regarding privacy, ownership and reproduction.

Children will need some adult assistance, so, full instructions, outlining how to get involved in our term 3 assemblies, can be found in the following file:

ON SITE SUPERVISION APPLICATION PROCESS
(This section contains very important information, repeated from a compass alert sent today 6th August, to enable families to change the language in the top left corner if necessary)

Dear parents & caregivers,

The Victorian Government has made some significant announcements about the introduction of new stage 4 measures and restrictions for schools across metropolitan Melbourne to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Our aim is to minimise the movement in our community for ALL staff and families to stop the spread. We understand the new guidelines are strict and firm and present challenges for families, however the decision to move to this arrangement is in the best interest of our community’s health.

The criteria for students that can attend the supervision on-site from Monday 10th August (during stage 4 restrictions) has changed as follows:
  1. children whose parents are permitted workers. See https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/guide-business%E2%80%93%20stage-4-restrictions-doc
  2. vulnerable children in out of home care, children known to child protection and other agencies and children the school identifies as vulnerable
  3. children with a disability who also must fit one of the above two categories

Now more than ever, we need your support to ensure we lessen the risk to all.

This means if you are home, please keep your child/ren at home. We have had many cases around us, and a few onsite late last term and the way to stop the spread is to stop the movement. The virus does not move. People move the virus. Onsite supervision will look different again– this will be supervision only by a skeleton staff. We have now asked that most of our staff to work from home.

If you think you meet the criteria above please complete the attached application form BEFORE 9am tomorrow Friday 7th August.  Full instructions are on the form. How does the school decide if a child is vulnerable? “A child who is in need of care and supervision to better connect them with remote teaching and learning where the school deems this cannot be provided adequately and consistently in the home context.”  If your child fits this category then they will be considered eligible for the supervision program.” If you choose criteria 2) or 3) we will make a time to discuss this with you tomorrow – we are also planning on reducing the number of times these children attend onsite. This will be differentiated case by case. Requests for particular days will not be accepted in these two categories. The school will choose the days your child attends.  This will allow us to spread the number of student’s onsite across the week, and therefore reduce the staffing requirements.

If there are two parents at home and you are BOTH permitted workers who do not work from home, we will require updated letters from your employers (for BOTH parents) or the new DHHS Work Permit stating you are a permitted worker and are unable to work from home including hours and times of work. This may be followed up by a call to your employer.

We thank you for your understanding and support as we try to navigate these changed and very challenging conditions together.

THANK YOU & TAKE CARE
Thank you to all AVPS community members for your continued patience and support of AVPS as we all come to terms with stage 4 restrictions in our wonderful city of Melbourne and community of Ascot Vale.  2020 has certainly turned out to be one like no other. We continue to be nothing but impressed by the very high levels of staff collegiality, flexibility and creativity to plan and deliver teaching and learning programs to suit a multitude of individual needs in what have turned out to be very challenging times.  We are equally impressed by our student's capacity to bend and adapt with the current environment and produce their very best efforts.

We learnt in term 2 that high doses of co-operation, kindness, compassion, patience, flexibility and humour (interlaced with our 5 school values) were essential to get us all through together and we are pleased to report there has been no shortage of these essential ingredients on display in and around AVPS in term 3.

Thank you, well done to all and take good care.

#wevegotthis #AVPSinthistogether

With much gratitude,
Sue Osborne & Michael Downing
