- Staining / coating the circular deck

NAPLAN – 14-16 May 2019
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

All students in Years 3& 5 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. We will be using paper tests again this year. More information, including what is tested and when (a timetable) will be distributed to families next week.

Kind regards
Sue Osborne  & Michael Downing, AVPS Principal Team
FUNDRAISING NEWS
Hello parents and carers of AVPS students

As the coordinator of fundraising this year I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sue Macaulay. I currently have 3 children at AVPS and a daughter in year 8 at Princess Hill Secondary College (ex-student of AVPS). This is my eighth year as a parent rep and second year as a fundraising coordinator. It is a very rewarding experience, especially working in such a supportive and close knit community as AVPS. We live by the motto many hands make light work! and encourage everyone to get involved in this wonderful school community.

I am therefore seeking parents or community members to consider taking on a variety of roles to help share the load with fundraising this year. Not only will this help raise valuable funds for the school but it will also provide you and your children with rewarding experiences and help you to make valuable connections with the school and community members.

We have two confirmed events coming up this term that require a coordinator / organiser and several volunteers to chip in to help make these events run smoothly. Please consider the information below and contact Kylie in the office ASAP if you can help.

AVPS FURNITURE FUNDRAISER
As a result of our capital works upgrade, AVPS has a large amount of excess furniture or miscellaneous items that need to be 're-housed , re-used or re-cycled'. We are very keen for these items NOT to end up as land fill, so please make us an offer or donation for any of the items appearing in the gallery below (click arrows to scroll). Items will be sold on a first come first served basis, most are available for immediate collection. Some items, such as the staff room and waiting room furniture will not be available until new furniture is delivered, in which case we will reserve the item/s for you.
Please see Kylie or Christina in the office to purchase or reserve an item, or call them on 03 9370 6507 to 'make us an offer'.
Please also contact us if you know of a charitable organisation that may benefit from unsold / excess items. Thank you.
NEWS FROM THE SPORTING FIELD
At the end of Term 1, two students from Unit 4 went to the Regionals for Swimming, Jordy and Lauren. Congratulations to both of them for representing our school and district. Both students swam amazingly and Lauren achieved a personal best with swimming the 50-meter butterfly in 38.17 seconds!
Inter school Sports is due to start tomorrow Friday 03/05, so  please ensure you’ve looked at Compass and have given your child permission to attend. The winter sports are AFL, Netball and Tee ball, all information regarding who we are playing and where can be found on the window out the front of Unit 4. If your child is playing AFL it is compulsory for them to have a mouth guard, please ensure they have one or they will not be allowed to play.
The first round (03/05) is a home game against Kensington Primary School, Netball and tee ball will be played at school while AFL will be played at Canning Reserve. The second round (10/05) of ISS is an away game at St Mary’s, Netball and Tee ball will be played at St Mary’s and AFL will be played at Fairburn Park if you wish to attend and cheer on our teams

The past two weeks in PE the 5/6s have been focusing on Tee ball to get them ready for ISS, while the Prep – 4s have been focusing on Athletics to slowly get the 3/4s ready for the AVPS Athletics Carnival which will be on the 23rd of July and the Prep – 2s to further develop their fundamental motor skills.
On Tuesday the 30th of April three classes had the opportunity to have a special AFL clinic run by three members of the North Melbourne Football Club, Scott Thompson, Ben Mckay, Declan Watson and Mufaro. It was a fun and an amazing opportunity for those students who were able to attend! North Melbourne Football Club will be running a four week AFL Clinic on Thursday starting next week, this is only for classes who have PE on Thursdays. If your child does not have PE on Thursday don’t worry I have organized a Cricket Clinic and an Athletics Clinic for this term, every student will have something special happening in Term 2!

In week four the Prep – 2s will receive their PE homework, so parents please be on the lookout for it, all information regarding what they need to do will come through the newsletter.

On Monday we have Alex a WAFL player from Essendon to come and promote Auskick if you are interested in signing your child up for Auskick please go to the website, https://play.afl/auskick to find a venue close to you.

If your child is wishing to start an after school sport or sporting club please ask me and I will be happy to help find options for you as a family to look into.

TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OF STUDENTS
AVPS requests that parents, guardians, carers or visitors to our school who may be taking photos or videos (eg assembly, special events) please be mindful of their use of media, particularly when this may contain images of other students, either directly or in the background. Please be aware that there are a number of students who do not have permission for their image to be published online. Please also note, permission to publish is for the school only. We therefore request that parents, guardians, carers or visitors taking photos or videos be conscious that they do not have permission to publish images and ask that  images of other students are NOT posted online, including social media sites.

ALLERGIES & a reminder about CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
We have a number of students with allergies at Ascot Vale PS who require specific management. Some of these students also suffer from Anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction to a range of allergens. These reactions can be life threatening for some students.
We therefore ask that all parents and caregivers DO NOT distribute food at any time without the direct permission of the regular classroom teacher.
Our ‘Celebrating Birthdays at AVPS’ guidelines provide more details about this important school rule and is available online at:
http://avps.vic.edu.au/uploads/9/5/6/5/95656824/celebratingbirthdaysguidelines2017.pdf

STUDENT SAFETY - BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL
There have been a large number of students arriving early to school without parent or carer supervision. It is the parent’s responsibility to care for students:
  1. travelling to and from school and
  2. outside the times of supervision before and after school
Supervision IS provided from 8.45am before school at to 3.45pm after school. Students must not be left attended outside of these times.
https://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/spag/safety/Pages/supervision.aspx#link37

BIKES, SCOOTERS AND COMMUNITY SAFETY
Students and parents/ caregivers are reminded that bicycles and scooters are NOT allowed to be ridden on school property between 8.45-3.45pm. Bikes can be ridden after the 3.45pm bell as long as appropriate protection is used and that parents/ carers are supervising. We encourage students to ride to school however health and safety rules must protect pedestrians and our community members inside these times.  Students have recently been reminded by their teachers. We ask for your help with this matter.

PARKING –DROP OFF ZONES

Parents/visitors are reminded to please follow the  Moonee Valley City Council’s (MVCC) rules and regulations pertaining to parking and the drop off zone near our school. Some parents/visitors have been observed leaving their cars in the drop off zones, which impacts the efficiency of the drop off system and deems drivers at risk of being fined. MVCC parking officers regularly monitor these zones and issue fines for breaches of the rules. To ensure the zones work effectively, drivers should:
  • ask your child to head straight to the pick up zone once the bell rings –they will then be ready and waiting once you arrive
  • plan to arrive after the bell rings, not before, as you cannot wait in the zone
  • remain in your vehicle at all times
  • move forward to join the queue so that other cars can move into the zone
  • use the handbrake when the vehicle is stationary
  • not double park
  • not park across a pedestrian crossing or driveway
  • not undertake a U-turn in close proximity to the school
  • not use the staff car park as a drop off zone
What does the no parking sign (in the drop off zone) mean?
Drivers cannot park in the drop off zone during the times identified on the sign as this is only  to be used as a pick up or drop off zone during those times.
Vehicles are only allowed to stay in the drop off zone for two minutes. If you overstay this time limit, you may receive a parking infringement.
IN PARTICULAR - PLEASE NOTE – The Bank Street car park and lane way MUST NOT be used as a drop off zone or for completing U turns as this is a DANGEROUS  manoeuvre around small children.
We strongly encourage parents and carers to please follow the requests above in order to keep everyone safe, particularly our children.
We encourage parents / carers to park away from school and walk a short distance to avoid traffic congestion.
