FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM

CAPITAL WORKS OPENING CEREMONY
AVPS was treated to an extra special celebration on Wednesday 17th July, when the Minister of Education (and Acting Premier on the day), Mr James Merlino,  officially opened our $1,790,000. Capital Works Project. Mr Merlino is pictured above/right with our local State Member for Essendon, Mr Danny Pearson, cutting the striking 'purple' ribbon.

Other invited guests in attendance included:
  • Representatives from Haskell's Architects and Interface Construction
  • Mr Mike Lanyon, AVPS's 2018 Acting Assistant Principal
  • Mr Christopher Thompson, the Victorian Deputy Secretary of Education
  • Ms Allana Bryant, Senior Education Improvement Leader for the Moonee Valley network of schools, representing the Victorian S-W Regional Director, Dr Wendy Timms.
It was a fitting way to acknowledge the vision, collaboration and hard work of our school community and to thank everyone  across the AVPS community for their patience, co-operation and understanding throughout, what turned out to be, a most complex and disruptive project.

Molly and Quinn, SRC reps from Unit 4, presented an outstanding overview of the project elements, highlighting that the new toilets are the general 'favourite' of the older children. Other features that have impacted favourably amongst the children included the new playground, garden beds, oval, bag racks, sick bay, Unit 2 refurbishment and hallway. The freshly painted spaces in school colours was also a hit with the kids. Thank you and congratulations to Quinn and Molly for such a thoughtful, high quality presentation.

For those who were unable to attend the ceremony, please enjoy the slideshow of images below that depict before, during and after images of this vast and complex upgrade, which was on display at the opening ceremony.

ATHLETICS
Thank you to our PE teacher Britt (pictured), parents/volunteers and teachers for your hard work in organising or assisting with the year 3-6 athletics day, at Aberfeldie Athletics Track last Tuesday. The weather was particularly kind to us all, allowing for an uninterrupted event, despite very heavy rain falling before and afterwards.

Well done Britt and congratulations to all children who participated and/or qualified to represent AVPS at the upcoming district event.

FETE NEWS
Please support our 2019 school fete by signing up to help on the day and/ or by collecting items on the 'fridge list' that was distributed recently. See Sue Macaulay's report below for more details.

Please be aware that a 'fete' storage pod will be delivered to AVPS in the coming days, with thanks to https://www.auspods.com.au/ , who have provided a discounted rate for our school.

 REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCE
Parents are requested to report student absences on Compass before 9:30am to avoid receiving an automatic message.

We are phasing out the use of email for reporting student absences. The main reason being, Compass is automatic, email is not. We sometimes miss messages on our school email account (before the 9:30am deadline), with important absence emails sometimes ending up off the page or in the junk box. They are tricky to find among a sea of advertising emails and our office staff are not always available to check email each morning. Please note, email communication is still ok to use for 'non urgent' messages.

Compass is, therefore, now our preferred method for parents/carers to report absences.

Please follow these steps to ‘add an attendance note’ , that is, report a student absence on Compass Mobile App:
  • click on your child's image
  • select 'approvals'
  • click on the '+' sign in the blue circle
  • complete the reason and details/comments section
  • select dates (defaults to 'today', but you can choose any date)
  • click 'add attendance note'.

These steps are similar when using a computer - Click: profile >attendance > notes/approvals > add attendance note

See our attendance policy below for more details.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Getting to know Alister McInnes - U6A (3/4) graduate teacher
While Alister has been with us from the start of the 2019 school year, we have interviewed him to allow you to get to know him a little better.

What is your favourite colour?  People say I have a preference for blue clothing, so I guess blue.
What is your favourite food? Anything home cooked.
What is your favourite book? Bill Bysons short history on almost everything.
What do you do for fun? Depends on the season. Currently socialising with friends in a warm place.
Tell us a little bit about your family. I originally grew up in rural Victoria in a town called Corryong. I currently live in Ascot Vale with my partner Fiona and daughter Leni (20 months old).
Tell me how you first got involved in teaching. My passion for teaching was sparked while studying a science undergraduate degree in 2004.
Why did you change your career to teaching? It was always something I planned to do, so the change was inevitable.
What has surprised you the most about working as a teacher? How much a classroom had changed from when I was in primary school (for the better).
If you were not teaching, what would you be doing? Still working in my previous job.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us? I'm always up for a chat, come and say g’day.

There are only 12 weeks until the FETE so we need to get a few things organised. We are still seeking coordinators for the following areas. If we do not have someone to coordinate these areas they will not happen.

* Fairy floss and Lolly stall + Guess the lollies in the jar as part of the lolly stall
*Silent Auction coordinator - someone to set up the stall with all the silent auction items (these are currently being collected but we need some help) with a short briefing on what the item is how much it is worth and manage the are. Pack down at the end of the day collate the winners and let the office know so they can contact these people. You may need to help chase up people to pay up on their winnings.

If you can help by taking on one of these roles then please let me (Sue Macaulay [email protected]) know ASAP and put your name in the sign up page:
 https://signup.zone/3Gshe2pKjruBcBigr

It is easy to sign up:
1. Register an account ....new user
2. Click on the tab that has your area/ job (click the tab Food & Drinks Stall including Bar ect)
3. Choose your shift ( I would like the coordinator to be in the set up time slot if possible)
(once you select it you do not need to save... it's done!)

We need everyone to start collecting -  the fridge list and garden stall info  is attached below. Every family should have received a hard copy of the 'fridge list' last week, but if you did not, please print it off and pop onto your fridge to remind you of all the tings we are collecting. We will be having another FETE meeting very soon to discuss all things FETE.  Date TBC

PLEASE HELP ISAAC SUPPORT A WORTHY CAUSE
Dear students,
My name is Isaac and I’m in year 6 unit 4, and I’m on a mission to collect plastic bottle tops. For my term challenge I decided to research about helping hands supported by Envision. They turn plastic bottle caps into filament/string that they run through there 3D printer to create prosthetic hands. So I need all of you to tell your parents don’t throw out the plastic bottle tops because I need you to bring them in and put them in this box. I am going to set boxes up in every classroom to collect them and at the end of each week I will come around and collect them from your box. But the bottle caps have to have a 2 or a 4 on them other wise the people who make them can’t recycle the other bottle caps. And before putting it into the box please make sure they are cleaned.

Thank you
Isaac
FUNDRAISING NEWS

AVPS FURNITURE FUNDRAISER
As a result of our capital works upgrade, AVPS has a large amount of excess furniture or miscellaneous items that need to be 're-housed , re-used or re-cycled'. We are very keen for these items NOT to end up as land fill, so please make us an offer or donation for any of the items appearing in the gallery below (click arrows to scroll). Items will be sold on a first come first served basis, most are available for immediate collection. Some items, such as the staff room and waiting room furniture will not be available until new furniture is delivered, in which case we will reserve the item/s for you.
Please see Kylie or Christina in the office to purchase or reserve an item, or call them on 03 9370 6507 to 'make us an offer'.
Please also contact us if you know of a charitable organisation that may benefit from unsold / excess items. Thank you.
