YEAR 6 CELEBRATION

FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM

FAREWELL YEAR 6'S
Last night, we formally bid farewell to our 2019 year 6 students in the most delightful fashion. Friends, family and staff gathered in the hall where our graduates presented very thoughtful reflections of their primary school years. It was a wonderful community group hug; an opportunity to say congratulations 'you did good!',  farewell, and best wishes for a bright future ahead.

Congratulations and thank you to Sarah Ashton, Ellen Waters and Jason Simpson on preparing our year 6 students for such a special presentation.  Well done also to the children who did an outstanding job of peeling back their layers and letting us into their world. What amazing presentations they all gave, highlighting the importance placed on all kids doing their best. It was a real celebration of diversity, appreciation, optimism, achievement, humour and a bright, bright future ahead for all.

We have had a special request to publish the Secrets of Success, which was a parting message to our outgoing students. These are essentially the things learnt at primary school that wise primary school staff know, if you do these things really well, you will be set up for a lifetime of success and happiness. This year the experts were called upon for input into the list; ie, the AVPS staff on their lunch breaks. Enjoy:

SECRETS OF SUCCESS, AS LEARNT AT ASCOT VALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

  4. There’s more than one way to do things. (Annie and Lucy)
  5. Realise the impossible is possible. (Annie and Lucy)
  6. Think outside the square.  Be Creative. (Annie and Lucy)
  7. Be a leader not a follower. (Britt)
  8. No pain no gain.  (Britt)
  9. Always take the effort to walk to the last cubicle – (Ben)
  10. Don’t post anything online you are not willing to share on the screen at your school assembly. (Amanda)
  11. Think twice before you hit send. (Marg)
  12. Don’t wear white shoes. (Marg)
  13. Cover your mouth before you cough. (Marg)
  14. Focus on what a person has done for you rather than what they HAVEN’T done for you –  Looking on the bright side of life is the key to success. (Rozeena)
  15. Appreciate all that your parents do for you – especially through your teenage years.  They love you and you mean the world to them and sometimes they make sacrifices for you – so show them simple appreciation for this. Cherish your parents.  (Kerry)
UNIT & STAFFING ARRANGEMENTS FOR 2020
Please find details below about our staffing and unit plans for 2020. Note that the structure has changed slightly since the last newsletter due to higher than expected number of new enrolments and lower than expected numbers of students exiting the school. For the first time in recent history, we are expecting an enrolment of just over 300 students, which has resulted in the need to create a 7th unit; this will be located in the community room next to the music room. This situation has also created a teaching vacancy in Unit 3; we expect this position to be filled by mid January.

  • Fiona Stewart will be taking leave from 09/12/19 onward and for the 2020 school year.
  • Ian Lumb and Bev Loft have resigned their teaching positions at AVPS.
  • Britt Stephenson and Heath Smith have been appointed to ongoing positions.
  • Alister McInnes will continue his position at AVPS in 2019.

  • Jude and Fiona will be replaced in 2020 by Bridie Naughton and Aimee Burslem, who were successful candidates in a recent staff selection process.
  • We anticipate an additional teaching vacancy to be filled by mid January 2020.
We wish Fiona Stewart all the very best for a fabulous 2020 and thank her for all her efforts at AVPS in her teaching duties as well as managing the science, concerts and ‘wipe out waste’ programs across the school in recent years. Fiona's last day was Friday 6th December. Thank you and farewell Fiona.

Please note, we will have the opportunity to farewell and thank Jude for her contributions to AVPS early in 2020 as she will be returning for the first part of the year.
 FUNDRAISING THANK YOU
Appreciation is extended to Sue Macaulay, our outgoing fundraising and parent rep coordinator, for her outstanding contributions to the AVPS community over many years. Sue has helped arranged a plethora of community events and activities that have helped create that warm community feel that visitors and community members alike often comment about at AVPS.  Please read Sue's message below and consider 'Have you got what it takes to fill these fabulous shoes?' Or do you know someone who might fit this volunteer role at our school. Or, could you consider sharing this role with a friend? All suggestions will be considered. So please contact Sue or Michael in the office in the new year if you'd like to discuss possibilities for Fundraising and Parent Reps 2020.

2020 TRANSITION MORNING
Our whole school transition day is planned for Wednesday 18th December where all students will meet with their 2020 units and teachers for a morning session, 9.30-11.00am. Our new Preps will also be part of this session. Current Year 6 students and students leaving us will be participating in an activity with specialist staff. A confirmation notification of your child’s 2020 placement will be sent home on that day (18/12).

LAST DAY FOR TRANSACTIONS
The last day for making payments to the office in 2019 will be Wednesday 18th December. Kylie and Christina would appreciate families finalising all transactions by this day to allow them to complete their (very busy) end of year office procedures. Thank you.

SANTA ASSEMBLY
We hope you can join us for our end of year assembly on the last day of term at 9:00am on the oval in front of the new stage. This is an opportunity to celebrate the end of a wonderful 2019 and to help get us all into a festive spirit. Please bring along a fold up chair or blanket to sit on. Nb, The coffee van will be available until just after the bell.  We hope to see you all on the oval just after 9:00am on Friday 20th December- weather permitting of course! So please cross your fingers xxx.

HOLIDAY SECURITY & MAINTENANCE
Close neighbours and friends of AVPS are asked to please keep an eye out on our school grounds over the holiday period and to please report any suspicious activity to police on ‘000’.

However, please be aware that Unit 3 will be painted over the holiday period, so tradespeople will have permission to be on site in the new year.

See you all back at school on Wednesday 29th January ( Years 1-6) or Thursday 30th January  (Year Preps.)
Kind regards and best wishes for a happy holiday period
Sue Osborne  & Michael Downing,

FUNDRAISING NEWS
Hi to all AVPS teachers, staff, friends family and students,

I would like to say a very huge thank you to all who have supported me with not only the FETE this year but all the events I have organised or been part of, because without your support and help I would not be able to achieve all the amazing things we have achieved for the school and our kids.

I have been a parent rep at AVPS for 8 years. I took on the role when my daughter, Holly was in G1 with Annie in U4. I followed Annie when she moved classrooms and now Kezi my youngest of 4 is moving on to another classroom to start G2 next year.

Over these 8 years I have helped out in the classroom with reading, organize cupcake stalls, special lunch days, Mother's day and Father's day breakfast, Mother's and Father's Day gifts (so every child can take home a gift to give to their parent on these special days), new prep parent morning tea's, art auction items for the last 3 FETE's, Fresh Fruit Friday's, Icy pole and popcorn sales.
I have also been a fundraising coordinator for the last 2 years with the biggest event being our recent FETE. This was a fabulous school event that brought so much community spirit and fun into the school (oh and whole bunch of money), but I could not have done this without all your help and support. So a very huge THANK YOU, to YOU, my wonderful helpers.
Now it is time for me to step aside and let others take over some of these important, rewarding, fulfilling roles.
We need lots of volunteers to step up and make the commitment to take on the following rolls:
*Fundraising Coordinator (this is a big one....maybe 2 people required here)
*Parent rep (we need 2 people per unit. Part time workers with Friday's off preferably, because this day is when everything happens)
*Fresh Fruit Friday Coordinator
*Mothers Day & Fathers Day Breakfast Coordinator
*Mothers Day & Fathers Day craft activity coordinator
*Icy pole & pop corn Sales Coordinator (this is usually grade 5 parents as the funds from the sales go to next years G6 graduation)

If you are interested at all, in any of these rolls, please email me   [email protected]
Without coordinators for these rolls, they will not happen, so please consider becoming more involved in this amazing school community and keep the traditions going.

Don't worry I will still be at school helping out, but not in the same capacity.
I look forward to handing over the reigns to the new coordinators and enjoying the 2020 upcoming events.

Sincerely

Sue Macaulay
Fundraising coordinator
Parent Rep
A NOTE ABOUT REQUESTS
Please be aware that the school does not and cannot accept requests for teachers or units. The reason being, it is impossible for the school to satisfy such requests from everyone if this was to become usual practice across the school. It also sets parents/carers up for great disappointment if request are made that cannot be accommodated. This is a situation we would prefer to avoid and therefore ask parents/carers not to request a particular teacher or unit. AVPS staff go through a complex and comprehensive process of determining individual and social needs of students in developing unit groups for the following year, noting our multi-age structure also encourages students and teachers to be together for more than one school year where possible.

Please note, students and their families will be informed about their 2020 Unit placement in the final week of term 4 and will have the opportunity to meet with their new unit and teacher (where possible) before the end of the school year.

YEAR PREP ENROLMENTS 2020 or STUDENTS LEAVING
To assist us with planning for the 2020 school structure, please finalise any Year Prep or new enrolments for 2020 as soon as possible. In addition, please notify the school if your child/children will not be returning to AVPS in 2020. It is important for the school to have this information at the earliest possible time to help organise unit structures, budgets and staffing arrangements. Your cooperation in this matter is much appreciated.
2020 AVPS ENROLMENT- UPDATE
We are only able to accept 2020 Year Prep- 6 student enrolments if Ascot Vale PS is the student’s closest Victorian Government Primary School. Regional Department of Education and Training (DET) Victoria staff have communicated that AVPS must limit the number of students enrolling from outside the designated neighbourhood area to prepare for a forecast increase in enrolment numbers in the coming years from within our designated neighbourhood. We are obliged by the Department of Education and Training (DET) to accept all students for whom Ascot Vale PS is the closest Government school to their permanent residence (residential address, not business).

Please visit the Find My School website to identify your closest Government school. If AVPS is not your closest Government school, your child may be placed on a waiting list.  Please contact the school (9370 6507) if you are unsure or have queries about our enrolment restrictions.

The school requires proof of current residence - either a current local council rates notice, utility bill or rental agreement and match this to a driver’s licence or passport. We accept all siblings, regardless of current residential address, however, at least one sibling must be currently enrolled.

PARENT PAYMENT POLICY AND CHARGES 2020
School Council have approved the attached policy and arrangements for student charges 2020. Features of the student charges include:

  • A $10.00 increase in Essential Learning Items (the first increase in three years).
  • Excursions, Sport and Swimming to be paid 'as you go' (when needed) in 2020.
  • Swimming charge is TBC but will be no more than $115.00
  • Canberra Camp deposit of $150 for Year 5 / 6 students and $50 for Year 3/4 students.
  • No change to MVIMP charges.
  • Part Five - Parents/ carers are encouraged, but not obliged, to contribute to our optional contributions to enable AVPS to add value to the following:
    • Building Trust Fund - the bulk of which will go towards replacing and landscaping the old playground.
    • Library Trust Fund - for the purchase of books.
    • Student Sponsorship - to enable all students to participate in camps and excursions.
    • Working Bee - in lieu of attendance at these events.

Please find the 2020 SAMPLE Student Charge Sheet and Parent Payment Policy below for your information, noting these charges are not due until 2020. More information will be provided later in the year regarding how parents/carers can pay for these charges. We are planning to set up online payment options via Compass, as well as continuing to accept payments in person at the office in 2020.
